Wholesale Coal Dealers Accused of Deliberately Keeping Down Production at Mines. A Seattle paper contains tbe follow ing: Wholesale dealers are responsible for lack of fuel and increased prices iu Seattle, by deliberately keeping down prodnction and creating an arti ficial shortage, while there is enough coal under tbe gronud close to tbe city to provide fuel, not only for tbe resi dents of Seattle, bnt for the fleets of tbe world when iu aotiou. This is tbe opinion of G. A. Keddiug, who has retired from the coal business, in which be was eugaged for many years in Seattle. "There is no justification," he said, "for an increase in the price of coal, exoept tbe desire of the operators to got as much as possible for their pro duct. To do this they depend upon tbe urgeut needs of tbe people and take advantage) of desperate circum stances. Last winter it was impossi ble, a great part of the time, for tbe retail dealers to get coal, and tbe wholesale men, knowing that coal was sorely needed, kept as little on hand as possible, and then pretended that it could not be obtained. "Coal has gone up in price within the last few weeks at tbe bunkers without tbe least reason in tbe world. It does not cost any more to mine now than it did formerly. Tbo men do not got any increase in wages and tbe cost of bringing it to tbe city has not ad vanced. Tbe fact is, all the coal lands iu Washington beloug to corporations that are interested in keeping them in an undeveloped condition. Thousands and thousands of acres of coal lands close to Seattle, if forced to give up their biddou treasure, would provide fuel not only sufficient for the needs of Seattle, but for tbe entire navies of tbe world when in action." 100 WORDS ON OREGON FRUIT By Hon. Wilbur K. Newell, President State Board of Horticulture. A the request of the Oregou Devel opmeut League, Hon. Wilbur K. New ell, President of tbe State Board of Horticulture, has condensed in the fol lowing one hundred words a statement about Oregon fruit that should be printed in every language known to tbe tongue of man : "Oregon excels iu fruit. Proof: Booauso tier apples are the acknowl edged standard of tbe world, bringing highest prices from tbe trade of New York, Loudon, Paris, and Berlin. Beoauso nature has given her a soil containing the necessary plnut food, a climate wibtout ex tremes, and moisture and sunshine just right to produce a fruit of beautiful color, lh-in texture, and unrivalled llavor. Carlile's statement as to tbe delay aud indifference he met with in conveying Jack Taylor, an indigent patient, to the county hospital, has led to an explanation on tbe part of ooun'y authorities. It seems, says the Weston Leader, that Mr. Carlile and his charge were expected to arrive on the morning train, and that a convey ance from tbe roor farm was ready at tbe Peudleton depot to meet them. Tbev did not arrive and toe rig came in again for the evening train. Tbe county judge and physician went through all the cats iu search of Car lile and Taylor, but overlooked tbem iu some manner, while neither did tbey see tbe officials. The rig was sent back empty, and then made a third trip in response to tbe telephone call from tbe sheriff 's offloe. Health in the Canal Zone. This was the third item of the pro gram of public worship, observed each Lord's day by tbe Jerusalem Church, and baa reference to tbe Lord 'a supper. First, we inquire into the meaning of this service. Tbe one loaf represents tbe one body 1 Cor. 10:17. In figure the Church is oalled the body of Christ, Epb. 1:22, 23. When the Church was organized, it was a unit Luke tells us that the Lord added to tbe Cburcb, not Cburohes. So those who love these divisions in tbe Christian world and stand for tbem, cannot carry out this meaning of the Lord's supper. It is a participation in tbe body and blood of Christ, 1 Cor. 10:16. In tbe Revised Version tbe marginal reading of this verse is "participation in," in stead of "communion of tbe blood and body of Christ," giving the better meaning of tbe Greek. We see tbe foroe of this when we remember that Christ is our substitute, 1 Pet. 2:24, aud thus becoming our life, because He died our death for us that we might live His life for Him. It is a remembrance of Him Lk. 22: 19. God so loved the world that He gave His Son that we might not perish. We are ever to keep that Gilt la mina. The emblems of the Lord's supper re- Dresent tbe broken body and shed blood of Christ for us, thus redeeming us from the powers of Satan, death and tbe gtave and He wants us to remember His dying love for us. By it we proclaim the Lord's death and coming again, 1 Cor. 11:26. What a tremendous testimony this is for Jesus I The world does not want to believe that Jesus died for tbem but whenever a Christian partakes of the emblems of tbe Lord's'supper he de clares to the whole world that Jesus "died for all that they who hve should no lonsrer live nnto themselves but un to Him who for their sakes died and rose again," 2 Cor. 5:15. Neither does the world believe He is coming again, see 2 Pet. 8:3,4. But He is coming again, see John 14:2, 8; 1 Tb.es. 4:16- 18. Second, bow often did they observe this service? Aots 2 :42 gives us toe program for publio worship, and it is a Dart of that urogram, iuacibuw we learn that they met upon tbe first davof tbe week for publio servloe. The whole Christian world, in theory aud practice, concede the primitive custom of assembling lor worsnip on every Lord's day, and they rely on 20r7 for nroof. But they mangle tne pro gram of worship, plaoed by the Holy Spirit in the first Church, when thev atteuded to tbe teachings of the apost les, the contiibntion and the prayers eveiy Lord's day and leave but one item of that program the Lord s sup per to be observed once a month or once a quarter. Those who onserve the Lord's supper once a month or once a quarter, must, to be Scriptural and logical, have preaohing contribution and prayer once only each month or quarter. But someone says, "when we meet for the Lord's'supper, be it once a month or once a quarter, we ob serve it on the first day of the week?" This is neither logical nor Scriptural It is not true that tbey assemble upon tbe first day of tbe week, but upon a first day of the week. How often do we observe the 4th of July? Is it a fourth day of some July, or is it the fourth day of every July? Please no tioe that Ac's 20:7 reads they assembled to break bread "upon the first day of the week." Those who do not ob serve it upon tbe first day of each week, to be Soriptural, must have it read, "tbey assembled upon tbe first day of the month, or the quarter." Again someone says that, "observing it every Lord's day it beoomes common and loses its hold upon us." Tbe same may be said of Bible reading aud prayer, the daliy ilfe of the Christian. Tbey met, therefore, upon tbe first day of each week to remember Christ's death and oelebrate His resurrection, for He arose on that day. Besides we find in Lev. 24:5-8 au account of tbe tabernacle and the showbread. Paul tells us these things were "types and shadows of things to come." Tbe tabernacle was a type of the Cburcb, the Sabbath a type of the Lord's day, the showbread a type of the Lord's supper and the priests a type of Christ ians. The showbread was set in order every Sabbath; tbe Lord's supper be ing an antitype of this, must be set in order every Lord's day. V. E. Hoven. Dr. H. C.
