Governor Higgens of New York has taken a commendable attitude in regard to a bill, the reoognized pur pose of which to give Lawyer Pa trick, convioted of m order, opportunity for still further prolonging his fight against the execution of tbe sentence pronounced against bim. As to Pat rick's guilt there is practically no doubt, and Governor Eiggins properly said that the efforts that are being made to defeat justioe are "little less than scandalous." What was to be expected' was the defeat of Walter Pieroe. Pieroe had become each a permanent fixture with the demooratio party of Umatilla county, that apparently the voters came to a realization that in tbe ordi nary run of time and events, being mortal, he was subjeot to demise, and it were better to shelve him and give some one else a chance to warm up and get in the oollar.
