' The annual ball given by the Adams Knights of Pythias last Friday even itig, was well attended and tbe mem bers of the order who attended from here, say it was a success in every particular. W. R. Taylor and John King were iu LaGrande last week. Mr. Taylor was called there to defend the owner ship of a horse, which he was success ful in doing. Mr. King was a witness in the case. The special meetings being held at the Baptist church this week, are well attended. Rev. Ellis is conduc ting tbe meetings without assistance, and a great deal of interest is taken in his impressive sermons. X The city is installing five 32-candle power incandescent street lights on Hunt Avenue. It is thought, consid ering the territory to be lighted, that the Ave incandescent lights will give better results than one aro light If The picture show at the Athena opera house Friday and Saturday evenings was the best that baa ever exhibited here. Evidently electricity ia an important element in the suc cessful production of moving pictures. A petition addressed to the secretary of the interior, praying that sheep may be prohibited from grazing on tbe headwaters of the Walla-Walla river, has been prepared by Attorney God win, of Milton, and is being circulated for signatures. . Misa Ada Ely, Vho has been afflict ed with a mild case of diphtheria, ia recovering in fact she has not been confined to her bed at all, and the quarantine will be lifted from the Ely home in a few days. There has been no other diphtheria case in Athena. XAt the McEwen home Saturday tight a party was given in honor of Miss -Irene Shea, of Pendleton, a schcol mate of Miss Kate McEwen. A few of Miss McEwen 's friends were the invited guests. Cards afforded entertaniment for the evening, and refreshments were served. W. M. Sharp, field secretary for the Christian Endeavor Society of Oregon and Washington, will deliver an ad dress on .Christian Endeavor and its methods, at the Christian church this evening, at 7:80 o'clock. Re member the time this Tuesday even ing and everybody is invited, "espec ially all young people. .. Mr. and Mrs. McFarland have ar rived in the city from their home in the Willamette valley, and .are visit ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Beck. Mrs. McFarland is the mother of Mrs. Beck, and the two have not met in many years. Their stay will not be long, as they have been away from home for some time, visiting in Yakima, Touchet, and various other places. Mr. McFarland drove through and they have enjoyed the winter trip very much. V-Hoae Compauy, No; 1, of tbe Athena fire department responded to an alarm this morning. An oil stove at tbe home of Walter Ely became uncon trollable, and a bed chamber upstairs soon was filled with smoke. Plenty of help was soon at hand and George ge Foster threw the stove into the street, Fortunately the services of the fire laddies was not needed and no water was turned on. Bed clothing and the carpet was soorohed, but aside from this no damage was done. A TERRIBLE HOLOCAUST. Shocking: Loss of Xife Ia a Portland Fire, Yesterday Morning-. .. Fire that started yesterday morning iu a saloon at the east approach of the Morrison street bridge in Portland, resulted in a frightful loss of life and the total destnetion of fourteen places of business. Four persons are known to have lost their lives, and it ' is expected that other bodies will be found in the ruins and scores were injured, some of whom will die. Twenty-seven horses per ished aud a block of buildings were swept away. The east approach to the bridge wasbadly damaged. It is thought that from five to fif teen bodies are still in the ruius, which makes the possible death list 19. For nearly three hours the flames raged among the wooden buildings. Only one building remains standing on the block... On the south side of Morrison street four buildings were burned' In its early stages tbe fire claimed its victims. Men, women and children slept peacefully in the midst of death and tbe entire block was enveloped in fire before tbe alarm was sounded. Some perished while still asleep; others, startled from their dreams by the brilliant glare and the roar of the flames, awoke only to find every ave nue of escape cut off and expired miserably, calling vainly for belp.
