Shocking: Loss of Xife Ia a Portland
Fire, Yesterday Morning-. ..
Fire that started yesterday morning
iu a saloon at the east approach of the
Morrison street bridge in Portland,
resulted in a frightful loss of life and
the total destnetion of fourteen places
of business.
Four persons are known to have lost
their lives, and it ' is expected that
other bodies will be found in the ruins
and scores were injured, some of whom
will die. Twenty-seven horses per
ished aud a block of buildings were
swept away. The east approach to
the bridge wasbadly damaged.
It is thought that from five to fif
teen bodies are still in the ruius,
which makes the possible death list
19.
For nearly three hours the flames
raged among the wooden buildings.
Only one building remains standing
on the block... On the south side of
Morrison street four buildings were
burned'
In its early stages tbe fire claimed
its victims. Men, women and children
slept peacefully in the midst of death
and tbe entire block was enveloped in
fire before tbe alarm was sounded.
Some perished while still asleep;
others, startled from their dreams by
the brilliant glare and the roar of the
flames, awoke only to find every ave
nue of escape cut off and expired
miserably, calling vainly for belp.
