Ml communication! should be addressed to i he PRESS Athena, Oregon ATHENA, FEBRUARY 21, 1905 Oregon is represented at Wabhington by one lone representative, who is not under indictment in the land fraud cases. On Senator Fulton now devolves the work of looking after Oregon's in terests in both houses of the national congress. President Roosevelt has de cided to help him out, and has set down on the edict sent forth by Hitchcock and other cabinet officers that no more federal appointments would be made in Oregon until after the land fraud trialB. Fulton stock, as a consequence, is taking a boom, and when it is known that President Roosevelt took occasion to express his complete confidence in Oregon's junior senator, the stock will advance above par. Fulton is the man of the hour in Washington and in some parts of Oregon- Circumstances over which be had complete control in the first place put the Astoria lawyer in the United States Senate. Since then, cir cumstances have been crowding circum stances with appalling rapidity, but from appearances of things they are not com ing aoy too fast for Charles, Jr. This is the only conclusion to arrive at after reading of his masterful stroke in block ading tbe cabinet's purpose to hold up the federal office appointments, and gaining tbe president's assistance. Teddy and Charley will take care of Oregon all right, and while they are about it, Charley has a glorious oppor tunity to take care of his chances for a second term in the senate. There are instances recorded where the child of fortune has proven itself to be a twin brother to the child of circumstances. This may not be one of the instances, but Fulton has demonstrated in the past that he is shrewd enough to pocket circumstances, and tie a string or two on fortune. The position of the Press on the liquor question is understood by all. It favors the regulation of the liquor traf fic by license in preference to the pro hibition method with its "blind pig" trimmings. In the vote of the two precincts at the recent election by the bare margin of one vote, the town was saved from going dry, The saloon in terests gained that one vote, not through any particular influence they could bring to bear on the issue, but through the suffrage of voters who balloted against local option with the belief and understanding that gambling was to be eliminated; that minors were not to be allowed in saloons, and other nuisances were to be abated. It was a narrow victory for the licensed saloon, and with the local option law still on the statute books, the saloon man who per mits gambling in his place of business is virtually butting against a brick wall. Property interests and business interests cannot afford to allow gambling to en ter into the balance that is already tot tering. Gambling in Athena is at an end, and the sooner the saloon men re alize it the better it will be for all con cerned. The "walking delegate" is abroad in the land, and his latest effort toward the advancement of labor's cause is to foment dissension among the workmen on the buildings at the Lewis and Clark fair grounds in Portland. These "dele gates" hail from St. Louis, and are past masters in the art of creating dis satisfaction and trouble for both em ployer and employe. Having had the advantage of pricticing on tbe works of the St. Louis exposition, these agitators plan to close down work on the build ing now in process of construction for the fair and expect a general walkout. The local unions and labor leaders of Portland have so far refused to partioi- pate in a general strike. If a walkout should occur contractors are in a posi tion to fill all racancies with new men. It is contended that within ten years the whole nation will lot k to Washing ton and Oregon for its lumber supply. With Michigan and Wisconsin treeless as far as merchantable timbsr is con cerned, the state's timber lands will in crease rapidly in value yearly. The timbermen contend that the state owes it to the people of the state as well as to itself, as trustee for the educational institutions of the state, of millions of dollars of lands granted by congress, to enact adequate laws which will protect the virgin forests of the state against the ravages of fire as well as against un scrupulous land grabbers who haunt the office of the state land commissioner. The Spaniard is absolutely devoid of talent or conception when it comes to fire arms or explosives. He has sacri ficed a navy in support of this fact, and a Spanish anarchist the other day tried to blow up the Mexican legation in Paris. The Don made a dismal, bleed ing mess of himself, and the legation still does business. When we get ready to distribute Col. Wood over Weston precinct, it is safe to conjecture that do Spaniard need apply for the job. We'll employ either a son of Sunny Italy or a bewhiskered nihilist graduate. We be lieve in doing all things well. The gentle chinook and mild, soaking rains have caused the snow to disappear. Link Swaggart's poultry may now come off the fence with guaranteed protection from frost bite, and Pendleton's base ball games may be played as per sched ule. Qeorge Dewey Brown, the "crops are saved I" Sam Small's bow to the public on taking charge of the Brunswick Journal is characteristic. "We cut out the 'Salutatory' stunt." Mrs. Katie Stump announces that she is agent for the "R. M. Ball Im proved , Washer." See her and prove merits of this excellent machine. WILL M.
