A II communications should be addressed to h r PRKSS Athena, Oregon ATHENA, JANUARY 13, 1905 There is another "run" on Carnegie. Pittsburg dispatches state that fully 20,000 persons who regard themselves as heroes have applied for Carnegie medals. Heroes in every state of the union, from Maine to California, are sending notifi cations of their claims to the Carnegie hero fund commission. Every nook and corner throughout this broad land has yielded up one or more heroes. Hundreds have discovered themselves in Pittsburg alone. A peculiar part of the afluir is that, although the commis sion was organized in April, 1904, not a single award has been made. The ma chinery of the commission has become clogged; in fact, the wheels have almost stopped. As for the overworked secre tary and his colleagues of the commis sion , they are almost afraid to speak the word "hero" above a whiBper for fear of starting a fresh run en the office before the 20,000 or more heroes who are al ready registered have been sorted and mounted on particular pedestals to which their valorous deeds entitle them. Senator Fulton is talking a good deal these days about the flimsy character and insufficiency of the evidence upon which indictments have been found. If Mr. Fulton has inside information as to the proceedings in the grand jury room he would probably confer a great favor upon the government attorneys by" giv ing them the names of the parties who , divulged the workings of the inquisit ors, says the Irrigon Irrigator.. No one should pronounce a man guilty from the fact that he is indicted. Neither should we jump to the other extreme and say a man must be innocent because he occupies a high position, or because he was never before charged with a crime. The safer way is to quietly await the action of the courts. The fact that a man is a senator or member of con gress should . uot weigh for or against him. All men must stand equal before the law. A grange in Union county is up in arms at this lute hour shouting itself hoarse over threadbare issues against the portage roa 3. It met and drew up some resolutions, threats and questions, all of which are antedeluvian. The mem bers of that grange have been asleep for years and awoke too late. They go scurrying down to the legislature in the great name of the common people to ask the legislature to revoke what the peo ple appioved. All the questions thoy propose have boon answered until no one with an atom of gray matter will venture to ask them Hgain and they warn the legislature to look sharp for the tremendous wrath of a grange whose secretary is an old maid. All the re ply this "powerful" institution will re ceive will be a bland smile while the work of construction continues. Pen dleton Tribune. The winter egg question is the para mount one with poultry raisors and farmers' wives now as there is more ready cash in marketable eggs these days than in most any other product of the farm. There is a great diversity and variety of advice being offered upon the subject, and it is a noticable fact that few authorities agree upon its essential features, even to say nothing of the variations. This is probably because local and climatic conditions largely govern this particular feature of the poultry raising industry, as it does all others. Sarah Bamhardt has led perhaps the most strenuous life of any person now before the public. Hor stage deaths by self administered poisons, total about 10,000; she has jumped into the scenic artist's seine over 7,000 times; she has sent over 5,000 imaginary bullets into her head from a revolver, while about the same number of daggers have been plunged into her emaciated anatomy. QThe Russo-Japanese war is a hugely costly one in men. The casualties among the Japanese at Port Arthur 70,000; other battles, 78,000; total, 158,000. Total killed is estimated at 56,000. Rus sian casualties at Port Arthur, 21,000; in other battles, 129,000; total, 150,000. Total killed about 67,000. Oregon's legislature would not be a legislature, without a deadlock. The lock commenced to deaden at the be ginning of the present session, but was unlocked on the sixty-fifth ballot by the election of Kuykendall of the Mitchell faction, to the presidency of the senate. A $40,000 Hospital. James Mullinex, superintendent of the Walla Walla hospital, is "at the head of a corporation that has a capital stock of $40,000 to be used in building a new hospital. Sickening Shivering- Fits of ague and malaria can be relieved and cured with Electric Bitters. This is a pure tonic medicine; of especial benefit in malaria, for it exerts a true curative influence on the disease, driving it en tirely out of the system. It is much to be preferred to quinine, having none of this drug's bad after effects. H. Mun day, of Henrietta, Texas, writes: "My brother was very low with malarial fever and jaundice, till he took Electric Bit ters, which saved his life." At Mc Bride's drug store; price 50c guaranteed. Greatly in Demand. Nothing is more in demand than a medicine which meets modern require ments for a blood and system cleanser, such as Dr. King's New Life Pills. They are just what you need to cure stomach and liver troubles. Try them, at Mc Bride's drug store, 25c, guaranteed. I'll brave the storms of Chilkoot Pass, I'll cross the plains of frozen glass, I'd leave my wife and cross the sea, Rather than be without Rocky Moun tain Tea. Pioneer drug store. A Grim Tragedy is daily enacted in thousands of homes as death cldms in each one another victim of consumption or pueumonia. But when coughs and colds are proper ly treated the tragedy is averted. F. Q. Huntley of Oaklandon, Ind., writes: "My wife had consumption and three doctors gave her up. Finally she took Dr. Kiug's New Discovery for consump tion, coughs and colds, and today she is well and strong." It kills the germs of all diseases. One dose relieves. BUECHEL 4 f V . -- . . - . - p .i-y y f ) Errors of refraction and musclar errors of the eye successfully treated. Do you have any trouble with your eyes? If so, I guarantee to give you relief. A few of the many symptoms: Headache, dizziness, aversion to bright lights, sleepy feeling while reading, bluring of objects either at close range or distance, frowning or squinting, smarting or burning sensation in or around the eye, fatigue or requiring a stronger light when reading, dark spots floating or bright lights flashing before the eyes. You can't remedy an eye defect without glasses.- You may sometimes over come, or in the parlance of Optics, "accommodate" a defect by persistently taxing the muscles of the eyes; but you cannot cure it by that method of treatment. The only way is to supply the deficiency in the lens of the eye by the use of the artificial lens, thereby making vision again normal. Glasses fitted properly, accurately, scientifically to all defects of sight; artistically, as regards frame fitting and size of lens; satisfactorily, as to ease, comfort and price. We court comparison in goods, fitting and method, and require but n oppor tunity to convince as to the ease, comfort and pleasure afforded in the perfect vis ion. Corrections always g'ven.
