The wages of a soldier in Russia are 12.25 per annum. The daily rations are two pounds of a dry, coarse rye bread baked hard first, and then cut into strips and again baked; a small quantity of salt and some soup. The soup is made in a kettle holding 400 gallons, and is mostly hot water. The eoup is dealt out to the men in dippers, each man getting a share that is figured out to a nicety. Compare this pay and ration with that of the American- soldier. The truth of Phil Sheridan's statement: -"""Wfren you leave the United States you are camping out," is becoming more evident. A dry goods firm in Pittsburg 4 advertised a special sale of ladies' wrappers one day at ninety-eight cents. The figure nine dropped out oftthe newspaper form, and the store was besieged with applicants for the eight-cent wrappers. The firm realized that "'some one had "blundered," but "sold the garments . at a loss, and sent a bill for four ' hundred and five dollars to the newspaper. It was paid without protest.
