At the regular meeting of the Citv Council Wednesday evening, much business was transacted. The contracts for moving the Per kins building hack from First street, to construct sidewalk in front of same, and to build a bulkhead, 125 feet long toward the Coquille river to check the wash from waves around the property, were let to A. G. Erickson. Surveys for improve ment of Sixth street from the east end to the reserve in West Bandon, including Randolph street in West Bandon, were ordered made. Also improvements of Spruce St. from the south city limits to the south side of Dunham addition were ordered. Bills for the work done by the bondsmen on Atwater street were allowed and the work was accepted. The work of extending Main St. lorth from Atwater street was pro nounced a credit to the builders and is the first 300 feet was completer], it was ordered paid for. The city has under advisement the opening of Caroline street, which leads to Bandon Heights. High School Athletic Notes. An organization to be known as the Coos County High School As sociation, consisting of the Superin tendents, Principalsand one member of the student body, of each of the five high schools of the county, met at Coquille Saturday, October 15th and adopted a constitution for the purpose of which is to promote worthy ideals for the pupils of the schools in athletics, oratory and de bating. The By Laws give perm anent rules for elligaLility and rules to govern contests. We think this is a good step toward forming a more perfect unity and promoting the fraternal relations of our high schools. Basket ball managers and captains have been chosen for both boys’ and girls’ team ., and practice has begun in the old school building. The managers have not been able, as yet, to arrange for a palce to play The coming exhibition games, season promises to be the most in teresting and exciting of all previ ous years, because all the five schools are expected to enter with both boys’ and girls’ teams. Ban don expects to “show ’em a few” this year. Sunday School Rally. A big Sunday School Rally was held at the Presbyterian Church Wednesday, which was participated in by a numlier of the Sunday schools of the city. The meeting was addressed by Dr. J. T. Abbott, district superin tendent of the Eugene district. Mr Abfiott’s address was highly appre ciated by all present, as it was a very able discourse on Sunday school work. A large audience was present and the meeting was most enthusiastic. HURRICANE ON SOUTHERN COAST (Wireless via Cape Blanco ) Jacksonville, Fla., Oct. 19th A disastrous hurricane causes destrue tion of much valuable property m towns of Southern Sta rs, tele graphic communications with interior towns is cut off, and heavy loss of life is feared. San Fv^ncisco, Oct. 19th—The freighter Nevadan nearly sank when forced propellor blew off shaft and punctured hull. New York, Oct. 19th —Aban doned airship America may yet be plaything of shifting winds ot the Atlantic ocean. Man’s first attempt to cross the ocean in an airship has failed, but Walter Wellman anil his party and the kitten, w ho assayed the voyage, are safe, rescued in a dramatic manner by a steamer off the coast of North Carolina. Well man and his party have profited by their attempt to cross the Atlantic, as when they try again they will know that the long rope which dragged in the water proved to be useless for the purpose intended. Portland, Oct. 20th.—Explosive is found. Dynamite is found depos ited in three places near the homes of Portland real estate operators. No definite information is gained as to real motive of those who placed the dynamite in position. San Francisco, Oct. 191I1.
