Mew York, Oct. ¡9. — Walter
Wellman and the members of the
party on the baloon “America,” who
were rescued at sea, 360 mile* off
Cape Hatteras yesterday, are on
board the steamer Trent, ninety
miles east off Sandy Hook, and are
proceeding slowly in a heavy fog.
1 lie ‘America” established a new
record for sustained flight. In 12
hours it covered a distance es ¡mated
at one thousand miles r\ wireless
message frmi the I'u-ut rep iris all
on board are well.
Wellman says that after working
well to s a Sunil tv. the “ V’lerica"
was caught in a thirty mile north
west blow which carried the airship
nit of its course. When night caine,
the equilibrator jerked and bumped
»ver the waves, threatening the
‘‘America” with destruction. The
crew were calm, but greatly ex
hausted, and one after another went
10 sleep, expecting to wake np in
the sea Every effort was centered
>n keeping the “America” aflcat,
the gasoline being tossed into the
iea.
The course laid was for the Azores
but the veering wind made it impos
sible to reach the islands with the
reduced gasoline.
Bermuda was the next ho|>e, but
Monday night more gasoline and
vome damaged machinery were jet
tisoned to keep the ‘‘America’'
afloat. Early Tuesday morning the
rescue came. The frent was sight
ed tw > hours away and signalled.
Hie lile lion was successfully launch
•d, but not until it was almost cap
sized by a blow iro n the cquilibra
tor. The weight of the lite bo.it and
party removed from the airship, the
“America” shot up into the air and
juickly disappeared.
Wellman believes the feat of cross
ing the Atlantic with a bag may be
accomplished in a 1 irger and strong
er air raft. The equilibrator was
the fault and mistake of the expe
dition, he says.
Four Mile Locals
Mr. and Mrs. Page and son of
Napa, Cal , came up to see about
their ranch just south of Fwir mile.
They came with a team and expect
to stay all winter.
Mr. Patterson and Frank and Fred
Colgrove came down to visit at R.
P Hunt’s. They all took a trip out
to what is known as the Curtis place
and bagged two fine fat bucks
Tl te duck hunters ue not having
very good luck this year, the geest
and dud.s being very scarce so far.
Mr. Garfield took a party of pleas
ure seekers down the co < »t Sunday
expecting logo to D.utyville, but
the automobile broke a shaft at
Green Gulch and the party had to
hustle a team to get back to town
that night. They repaired the ma
chine Tuesday and it is again in
running order.
A. Davis is still working on the
road and expects to finish his fall
work soon.
Quite a turnout from Four mile in
Bandon last Tuesday. Mr. De Long
took a large load of apples to town,
Mr. Goff spent the day in town, Mrs.
Bull and Mrs. DeOss were Bandon
visitors, also Mrs. Fred Mill and
children.
Mr. John Stillwell moved his don
key engine to Mr. DeGesen’s place
to help clear some ground of logs
and stumps.

At the regular meeting of the Citv
Council Wednesday evening, much
business was transacted.
The contracts for moving the Per
kins building hack from First street,

to check the wash from waves
around the property, were let to A.
G. Erickson. Surveys for improve
ment of Sixth street from the east
end to the reserve in West Bandon,
including Randolph street in West
Bandon, were ordered made.
Also improvements of Spruce St.
from the south city limits to the
south side of Dunham addition were
ordered.
Bills for the work done by the
bondsmen on Atwater street were
allowed and the work was accepted.
The work of extending Main St.

is the first 300 feet was completer],
it was ordered paid for.

leads to Bandon Heights.
High School Athletic Notes.
An organization to be known as
the Coos County High School As
sociation, consisting of the Superin
tendents, Principalsand one member
of the student body, of each of the
five high schools of the county, met
at Coquille Saturday, October 15th
and adopted a constitution for the
purpose of which is to promote
worthy ideals for the pupils of the
schools in athletics, oratory and de
bating. The By Laws give perm
anent rules for elligaLility and rules
to govern contests.
We think this
is a good step toward forming a
more perfect unity and promoting
the fraternal relations of our high
schools.
Basket ball managers and captains
have been chosen for both boys’
and girls’ team ., and practice has
begun in the old school building.
The managers have not been able,
as yet, to arrange for a palce to play
The coming
exhibition games,
season promises to be the most in
teresting and exciting of all previ
ous years, because all the five
schools are expected to enter with
both boys’ and girls’ teams. Ban
don expects to “show ’em a few” this
year.
Sunday School Rally.
A big Sunday School Rally was
held at the Presbyterian Church
Wednesday, which was participated
in by a numlier of the Sunday
schools of the city.
The meeting was addressed by
Dr. J. T. Abbott, district superin
tendent of the Eugene district. Mr
Abfiott’s address was highly appre
ciated by all present, as it was a
very able discourse on Sunday
school work.
A large audience
was present and the meeting was
most enthusiastic.

New York, Oct. 19th —Aban
doned airship America may yet be
plaything of shifting winds ot the
Atlantic ocean. Man’s first attempt
to cross the ocean in an airship has
failed, but Walter Wellman anil his
party and the kitten, w ho assayed
the voyage, are safe, rescued in a
dramatic manner by a steamer off
the coast of North Carolina. Well
man and his party have profited by
their attempt to cross the Atlantic,
as when they try again they will
know that the long rope which
dragged in the water proved to be
useless for the purpose intended.
Portland, Oct. 20th.—Explosive
