BOND You travelers who this year aré seeking wonders at home will find them in abundance. Follow this series and map your tour to cover -as many -Wonder Spots” as possi ble. Your vacation never will be forgotten. Be sure to see the snowy Egrets of Jungle Gardens. Avery Island, Louisiana. One huadred and thirty thousand of these gorgeous birds may be viewed from April to July — leaving their young each morn ing to feed in distant streams, and returning In a billowy white cloud at night to where they are nesting in bamboo "apartment houses” or some water growing tree. These famous gardens are filled with wonders from the four corners of the earth. Flowers of all kinds abound; bamboo that grows eighteen inches in a day; papyrus from the Nile; the Sacred Wasi orange tree and tunnels of wisteria rfnes. The gardens cover 300 acres — every inch a delight. But upon many, the snowy Egrets make the most lasting impression. There is an interesting story be hind the fact that 130,000 Egrets now display themselves to a tour- 'uf public in one little bird city, i-ear than fifty years ago the Egret »• e almost extinct. This fact worried Edward Avery Mcllhenny, the owner of Jungle Gardens. Then he heard of the Rajah of Juraspore — who. for the gratification of a favorite concu bine, had built a vast bamboo aviary for birds of brilliant plum age from all parts of the world. When the Rajah died and the aviary feil apart, the birds stayed. It might happen in America! Eight young of the few remaining snowy Egrets were captured in the jungle swamps. They were caged. That fall they were given their liberty. In November they migrated but the following spring, six re turned to set up housekeeping. That fall, thirteen sturdy Egrets migrated. Next fall there were more. Today there are one hun dred and thirty thousand. It has been necessary to erect “apartment bouses" built of bamboo for this increasing throng, for every nesting space has long since been exhausted. Protected by law, these snowy Egrets are bringing thousands of tourists to Avery Island each year. It is impossible to give a complete story of such a “ Wonder Spot” In a brief article like thia — but a card addressed to E. A.
