XV, NO. 36 VOICE OF THE VALLEY Cave Junction, Oregon, Friday, December 26, 1952 Single Copy Ten Cents editorial Cougars Lose 53-40 to Eureka Friday; 21 Good Quarters Ends 57 40, Arcata IVHS to Meet Del Norte There 3rd; Jan. 4 Game in Doubt A ten-man Cougar basketball squad returned Sunday from an exhausting two-game invasion of two California towns over the weekend, dropping both contests to the larger schools. After building up a 9-1 lead in the first four minutes of play against Eureka high Friday night, the long five-hour trip began to tell on the local boys who wound up on the short end of a 53-40 count. Eureka squeezed by the Cougar to lead at the first quarter 11-10, and maintained that lead until th-- final gun. The score at the half was 27-22, and 45-31 at the third quarter. Although he didn’t start Friday night. Reinoehl led IV scoring with 13 points. .‘Harters and the-ii scoring were: Barton 8, Fickl-e 6. Cook 5, Plumlee 5 and Jones. Al so playing in action to Rei-neehl were Sanders 7, Terre-l 1 asnl Watson and Tycer. A nip and tuck batt-be wh-ich lasted until the middle o-f the third quarter resulted in Arcata high pulling ahead with a fourth q-u-ai- ter score of 57-40 Saturday night. Scoring see-s-a-wed back a-nd forth between the a-ppare-ntly ev enly matched clubs through the middle of the third quarter after a halftime count of 22-19 in favoi of Arcata. Cougar shooting eyes dim-med in the third and Arcata piled in points to make it 40-30 at t-he end of the third and 17 m-< -e i-n the fourth for a final 57-40 eou-nt. Scoring wa-s nearly evenly div ided between three Coug-a-r start members and others by seasonal finan cial worries, it is our hope every Valley family will find in the spirit of the holi day itself sufficient cause for which to be gladdened. May Christmas, 1952, bring for you the full amount of joy you’ve anticipated and the New Year of 1953 bring even richer physical and spiritual bl.es.sings«.
