Whether the world admits it or not, the collapse of national character which launched the war was the start of the debacle. The real recovery is the recovery of justice, truth and righteousness. Honesty, then optimism ’ Purity, then prosper ity ! There is no other way out. These are old-fash ioned doctrines—they are new-fangled doctrines for many. They are the eternal verities The real recovery act is the recovery of conscience. It must come in business: In the yardstick, in the gallon can, in the bushel measure, in the berry box, in the weights and measures, in the label, in the stuff in the car, in the sales talk, in the speedometer, in the advertisement, in the box office, at the cashier’s win dow, in the swivel chair. . . . There is one immutable law—honesty, then pros perity. We talk ot goods—but have we goodness? This is the real recovery.—Los Angeles Times. o----------------- THE NEWS’ LAST APPEAL! Some time back we published an editorial which was calculated to bring in enough money to get our fire truck in operation. Vain hope. We said we would start a subscription list with a dollar bill and asked a few more to do likewise and we would have our material bill paid for. NOW, we are going to make one more appeal. Instead of one dollar, tile News is giving five dollars and we humbly ask the good citizens of the city and those outside the city, who want to see the truck in operation, to give as much as they can toward this worthy cause. The need is great right now. We MUST raise' $35 to put the truck in operation, and this can be done at once, IF the money is forth coming. We owe $25 tor material and another $10 will do all the work nec essary to get the truck operating. We fortunately have a mechanic in town on a visit who will gladly stay over a couple of days and with volunteer help we can get the truck in operation. BUT we MUST act NOW’, or there is no telling when it will be com pleted. We are NOT infallible. An accident can happen any time, and if we dally along and one comes, won t it be a pretty story to say, "where was the fire truck?" "Why wasn’t it ready?" "It could have saved hundreds, maybe thousand's of dollars if it was operating." And many more questions and accusations could be made. Why, Oh W H> can't we finish the job we began so nobly long ago? It will only take the unselfish ef- lort ot a few who ( AN it they W ILL. Jones, chief of the fire de partment. We need your help NOW.
