The present building has been
changed from time to time to take
care of the rapid Increase and seats
have been crowded in 'such a man
ner &3 to be a great menace if ever
there should be a fire. The seating
capacity Is taxed to its utmost and
still there are from 10 tp 15 pupils
more than desks and no space for
additional desks. During the present
session the enrollment in the high
school has Increased from 122 to
165, about 40 per cent. Should this
be kept up next session It will be ut
terly impossible to conduct the high
school under the present facilities.
There is not much thought but
that this bond Issue will carry on
February 5, but it remains for every
legal school voter in the district who
deslr.es to have this building erected,
to express himself or herself in favor
of such at the election held In the
present high school building on Sat
urday afternoon, February 5.
During the present session there
has been a total enrollment in the
high school of 165 up to date. These
165 pupils come from the various
wards of the city as follows:
First Ward 59
Second Ward 67
ihird Ward 16
Fourth Wrard 23
Total, 165
At this same election opportunity
will be given the voters to express
their choice as to the location of the
new building. Four sites will be
named on the ballot, or the name of
any other site may be substituted if
so desired. The four locations sub
mitted on the ballot are: ,

. A business meeting of the W. C.
T. U. was held last Friday at the
home of Miss Alice Spauldlng on
North 8th street, and plans were dis
cussed for an Institute to be held
about the 20th of February.
Regular social meetings are being
held with a growing Interest among
the women.
The next meeting will be held
February 4 at the home of Mrs.
Graham on North Sixth street. The
subject under consideration will be
"Purity In Literature and Art." Let
each one bring some thought on this
most important subject and thus aid
in emphasizing the crying need of
purity In literature and art.
Mrs. Ada Wallace Unruh, the new
president of Oregon W. C. T. U., re
cently filled the pulpit of the largest
church In the state, that of the
White Temple of Fortland, at the In
vitation of its pastor, Rv. Whitcomb
Brougher. The ministers of Ore
gon are giving Mrs. Unruh a most
cordial welcome and they express
great satisfaction over the enthusi
asm engendered by her presentation
of the purposes and policy of the W.
C. T. U. Union Signal.
Mrs. Unruh will be In Grants Pass

Some have advanced the plan to
remodel the present high school
building Into a more modern nnd
commodious structure. Chas. H.
Burgraf, the well known school
architect, was In the city a few weeks
ago and Interviewed on this subject.
Mr. Burgraf expressed himself by
saying that It would "not be feasible
to make over the present building;
that It would bo almost as expensive
and still have an old bluldlng In the
end that would not be satisfactory,
either ta the architect or to the peo
ple of Grants Pass."
Besides Increased facilities for
high school, also additional room will
be needed next session for the grades.
It la the plan of the board of educa
tion to use the present high school
building for grade purposes, and In
a year or so, as the needs will re
quire, erect a brick ward school
building on the Bite now owned by
the school In the Fourth ward. When
these plans are perfected, Grants
Pass will then have a good, substan
tial ward school In each of the four
'wards in the city and a modern high
I school building.

sue of $45,000 In bonds will require
an Increased tax of not quite $1.00
on ench $1000 of assessable proper
Ity. This bond Issue should carry by
a large majority and should receive
' the support of every patriotic and
progressive citizen.

usual, he looked In on the Courier
force. Rev. Day, In speaking of
Woodvllle, snld that Its future look
ed very bright. The new school
house Is a great source of satisfac
tion to everybody in thaf little burg
and their new bridge across Rogue
river at that point, which will be
thrown open to the use of the public
within the next thirty days, Is an
other source of satisfaction. The
reverend gentleman says there also
appears to be some activity In real
estate, and tnken all together, Wood
