STEAM ROAD ROLLERS
Gasoline road rollers at their bent
are in an experimental stage. Can
the county or municipality afford to
spend the money of the peoplo as
well as valuable time In experiment
ing? Steam road rollers have been on
the market and in constant use for
twelve to fifteen years undor most
exacting and severe conditions of
strain and use and the leading in a
chines on the market today have
been brought to a point close to per
toctlon.
While the first cost of a first-class
steam roller is a little more than the
gasoline inachlno, the first cost ends
sooner or later, while the cost of
maintenance of gasoline rollers gocB
on forever, and the cost of repulrs
soon brings the amount up to a fig
ure far In excess of tho cost of a
flinl-claris steam muchlne, and valu
able tlmo wasted on account of break
downs and delays can never be re
gained.
During the Heason of 1908 tho city
of McMlnnvllle arranged for the use
of a gasollno road roller owned by
Yamhill county and known as the
"Yamhill County While Klephant.'
Tho records of tho city of McMlnn
vllle show that while they had the
uso of the machine for nearly three
months they were able to operate it
only forty-three days on account of
delays cutised by break downs. Our
lug this forty-threo days they wore
able to roll only about three-fourths
Of a mile of street. If It takes this
gasoline machine forty-three days to
complete three-fourths of a mile of
street it would require at a relative
ly swift progress, fifty-seven daj'B
of actual service to complete one
mile,
In practical macadam construction
using a first-class standard steam
roller, one mile per month Is con
sldered a fair average, while in
stances are known of double that
amount being constructed. Theo

Is something whose cost of keeping
Is far In excess of tho results of the
services rendered.
If the results of this gasoline ma
chine while employed on the street
work of the city of McMlnnvllle re
presents the best there Is In It, the
charge of being a white elephant Is
not far amiss.
Judge Bird, of Yamhill county, ad
mits that after moving the roller
from McMlnnvllle to Newberg, the
cylinders had to he sent to Portland
and be bored out and new pistons
and rings fitted, this In addition to

In view of the fact of needless de
lays caused by the brea downs of
this gasoline machine, the city of
McMlnnvllle has this season pur
chased for their own use a steam
road roller of standard make,

The experience of
county, Or., who also purchased a
gasoline roller was similar to that
of Yamhill county. One of the sup
ervisors who had charge of the work
stated that the roller was not In
working order six weeks altogether
during the whole season.
The city council of Aberdeen,
Wash., in deciding recently on the
purchase of a road roller specific
ally specified that they would not,
under anv conditions, entertain a
proposition for a gasoline roller, as
they have had experience enough
with gasoline engines In the motor
boats and automobiles.
The city of Portland, Ore., uses
the Buffalo steam roller exclusively,
as does the Warren Bros. Construc
tion Co., one of the largest paving
concerns in tho United States, hav
ing over one hundred machines In
almost constant operation in differ
ent sections of the country.
The city of Hoaqulm, Wash., dur
ing the season of 1908 purchased a
gasoline road roller, but its work
proved so thoroughly unsatisfactory
In every particular that they abso
lutely refused to accept it.
The city of Grants Pass has
caught the White Elephant fever
and now has one of these gasoline
rollers and are trying It out on their
street work. It was first tested on
the rock crusher, as it was guaran
teed to have ample power to operate
same to its fullest capacity, but
when put to the test It failed ab
solutely, and an Important casting
on the roller was broken before It
reached the quarry. What can bo
expected of such a machine when It
Is put to a severe test In actual con
struction work?

Medford Is now advertising the
wonderful possibilities of tho "Rogue
River Valley" In a new way. It Is
stated that C. F. Relchsten, the wood
yard man purchased a stand and
placed It In his residence. In spite
of the fact that the stand was varn
ished it Is claimed It is now shooting
forth sprouts nnd Is rapidly grow
ing. We have heard of a man In the
Roguo River valley who, after build
ing a rabbit-proof fence discovered
in the course of a few weeks that the
lower strand of wire hnd raised sev
eral Inches, the result of the posts
having taken root and rapidly grow
ing. The reader may make his own
deductions.

(rants Pass also has a sprouting
table at the home of A. Jackson,
linotype operator at the Courier of
fice. For some time past Mrs. Jack
son has been picking off the sprouts
ns they appeared through the varn
ished surface of tho table, but Mr.
Jackson finally advised her to let
them mow in tho hope that they
might be able to have uti abundance
of shade during the summer.

Grand Jury Commend Sheriff.
The grand Jury, which closed its j
labors on Wednesday and made its
tlnal report, was composed of some '
of the very best men In this county,
and their report will be found In
anotner column. It is certainly In
teresting reading. It Is commonly
remarked upon the streets that the
Present grand jury have done more
hard work ana accoropusncu wii
results than any other grand Jury
of the past. They found 30 indict
ments, 18 of which were liquor
cases.
The grand jury commends the
county officials and especially Sheriff
Kussell, for without his efficient aid
tho vast amount of work could not
have been accomplished. The Courier
Is pleased to call atention to the
well-earned words of praise given the
sheriff for he has certainly shown
hlmBelf to be a faithful county offi
cial, and it is with pleasure, mere-
fore, that we add our testimony to
that of the honorable gentlemen or
the Jury.

Gold for the Exposition.
One of the grand opportunities to
get to the front in a substantial man
ner Is through the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific
Exposition. Judge Booth,
our commissioner at Seattle, desires
to obtain the loan of gold nuggetB,
gold dust, platinum and other pre
cious minerals of this section to dis
play at the exposition. This will be
one of the best advertisements that
Josephine county could have, as it
will attract the attention of many
thousands of people. H. C. Perkins
has been appointed by the commis
sion to make this collection. Judge
Booth -says that all specimens loaned
will be Insured against fire and
theft, carefully taken care of, and the
commission will be responsible for
their safe return. It certainly Is of
the highest importance to have the
resources of Josephine county
Drought directly before the vast mul
titudes who will throng the fair dur
ing the six months commencing with
June. There Is no section of Oregon
which bus produced more gold than
the placer and quartz mines of this
county. In the last two years nearly
$100,000,000 In gold has been taken
out of the mines of Southern Oregon
and the most of this from Josephine
county. There are still many op
portunities to develop paying mines
here and the display of the gold
asked for by Judge Booth will be
a good way to enlist the necessary
capital.
Mr. Perkins will make trips to the
various mining sections of this and
Jackson county for the purpose of
securing these specimens, which ure
to be shipped to either of the banks
here to be transferred to Seattle, It
Is to bo hoped that he will be able
to make a big showing.
