Assures People Improvement Work Is Scheduled. the L. A. Newton, special agent of tho Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., hag just returned from an official trip to Portland, where he has been In consultation with leading officials of his company relative to the Installa tion of a new, and In every way mod ern telephone system at Grants Pass. Mr. Newton Is pleased to assure the people of this city that active op erations upon the construction of a new central energy system for this :ity will be begun as soon as mater ials can be placed upon the ground, together with a guarantee that said system will be fully completed, ready for operation, before the close of the present year. Grants Pass will have one of the most up-to-date central energy plants on the Coast. It will mean an expenditure of at least $50,000 before the system is completed, a large portion of which will be paid to labor In this city, as a large con struction crew will be In the field continuously, overhauling the old plant, taking down overhead wires and Installing in their place aerial cable. This cable Is composed of small copper wire in pairs from 50 to 200 to the cable, which will greatly reinforce the efficiency of transmission, since copper Is a much better conductor of electricity than the metals In use under the present system. Perhaps It will be of interest to the people of Grants Pass to know that the many new features of this new central energy system will do away with a great deal of the annoy ance necessarily caused by the pres ent system for Instance, Individual and two party lines will be Installed. The party lines will be equipped with selective ringing, that Is, In case of a two-party line central should ring for a subscriber, only one ring, and that his own, would bo heard by the party culled, thus doing away with annoyance of hearing a ring for an other party, and making tho service like that of a one-party line in that but one ring Is heard. Making this change from the old system, the abolition of all the old style telephones and the placing of new and up-to-date phones In their places will be required and this chango will necessarily consume a considerable period of time. Another feature of great advant age of the central energy system lies In the fact that It will no longer bo necessary to ring for central, thus causing delay and waste of time, but the moment the receiver Is taken down and placed to the ear central is Immediately notified of your call by a small lamp signal In the switch board, the number desired Is given you without the delay of the old sys ti in. The switchboard to l Installed at Grants Pass Is to be of the very lat est common battery type and when completed will cost In tho neighbor hood uf six or seven thousand dol lars. This with a complete operat ing force will certainly give this city un excellent service. In addition to these changes and betterments above noted we might say that the Pacific Tel. and Tel. Co. have Installed a modern and up-to- date telegraph system to work In conjunction with their long distance : telephone, and are at the present i time employing two telegraph oper-! ators in this work In addition to 1 their already large force of telephone operators. Uy this means a long ; distance call can be placed much ! more quickly than under the old , conditions, as the same lino con- 1 structed of heavy copper wires can ' bo used to telegraph when the cor vvrsatlon Is going over the same, and thus th telegraph operator at ; place of destination can have your I party ready for conversation before j the same call could be plucod by long distance telephone operator. j The company hns recently com-! pleted another No, 8 copper circuit j to Portland, which will facilitate the handling of long distance bus Iness to the north, thus giving i drants Pass three copper circuits one local line and two through Hues connecting San Francisco and the Intermediate points to tho south ! well. The company wishes to assure the people of Grants Pass that thev j have ever hern willing and anxloui Jto give the city the best possible .telephone system and lorrl'e. and theno changes long contemplated, would certainly hare been made before this had It not been for the panic of the past year and the strin gency of the money market, thus curtailing new equipments and lra Now 'John, See What You Have Missed !!
