It !e pleasant to take, acta aptly. Bold by 8abln'e drag re. The Scalp Bounty. Editor Courier In answer to J. II. Roberson, In last week's Observer, I appear before you humbly beg glng pardon for a space, because of the fact my friend Roberson does not read the papers, as closely as he might, especially the Observer. From Friend Roberson'a remarks I glean, it does not appear to be alto gether against the principal of offer ing a bounty that objections are off ered by the negative but from parsi mony and greed, as Mr. R. says It (the bounty) will come from the money In the treasury and out of the taxpayers' pockets. I would ask where else would you expect It to come from? This appeal Is as flim sy as John D. Rockefeller's plain tive cries against a tax on Standard Oil stock. I am a taxpayer also and have been all my life, but what pro portion of said tax money for boun ties would I or Mr. Roberson Pay? Let us see. The state levies a tax on some thing like $1,500,000,000; Josephine county pays on 18, 212, 762. Mr. Robinson anl I will pay taxes on say $1000 each. That would be our pro portional part on a bounty, on a 1 mill tax or one-tenth of a cent? infilnlteslmally small, only a few cents at the outside figures. A levy of 1-1 0th of one mill on the dollar would be sufficient. Then why this hue and cry about the poor taxpay ers' money going to pay a small bounty on dangerous wild animals? But Mr. R. says they are not dan gerous. This Is another erroneous conclusion. Mr. R. says "there are none of us but what would take a pop at every wild animal we Bee every chance we get, no not one." This conclusion Is also erroneous. Ask the old man Reynolds living at Waldo if he did not weaken some few years ago while hunting on the headwaters of Rough and Ready, Southern Josephine county, when a huge silver tip grizzly came out of the thicket a few yards from him on the upper side hill and looked ' down on him with an unearthly I growl, which he told me was one ,tlme, although on horseback with a loaded Winchester, he did not dare take a pop at him, for this bold mon arch of the woods stood his ground ' and if crippled would have bourne down on the hunter like an ava lanche, and it would have been the last of Mr. Reynolds; but Mr. Rey nolds' pony carried him out of dan ger Quicker than I tell It. Every one knows Mr. Reynolds to have been a brave man, an old pioneer of of the Western country. There are but few silver tips left, but there are as many cinnamon bear, which some hunters tell us are as danger ous to cope with as the grizzly. Friend Roberson would take a pop at any of 'era like the Irishman, who was out hunting and became weary and lay down on a log and was doz lng when all at once a wild cry or scream near him suddenly disturbed his neaceful slumber. It was such a scream, not unlike that of a wo man, that makes the hair stand on end and cold chills run through MINERAL every nerve In the body. "The brave hunter", this son of Hibernia, looking back on his trail saw dis tinctly with his own eyes, the huge mountain Hon on his track advanc ing toward him, then he exclaimed, "It be tracks you are looking tor is it? By faith, then I will step you oft a few," said Paddy. The assertion that wild animals would become more numerous in counties "where the bounty system Is in vogue" as expressed, is so silly then some, it makes me laugh. The admission of Mr .R. in his peortlon or "Philllpic" that many men and boys would Bpend their time hunting wild animals and thus not be able to pay their store bills and thetr lawyer's fees, Is an admission that wild animals would be hunted for, but a lurking fear that the store keeper (Mr. Roberson being one) might lose by such a law. This plea does not appeal to lawyers, doc tors, or hod carriers or to me. Such argument is In the nature of "avoidance and confession." Tiie facts are avoided and truth con- APPLICATION NO. i 02594 United States Land Office Roseburg.
