The capture of Agiilualdo has been of the most material effect in cauain g a cessa tion of organized hostility and hli subse quent peace manifesto and his friendly position toward the United Blates government has left little pround on which the insurrection can stand. The time draws near fur the s 'U lu men t of the question as to whether or not Grants l'ass will celebrate this year. Tbe sentiment lias found expression that inasmuch, as we have held in the past two years, two highly successful and glorious celebrations, it is time to test and give neighboring cities our attendance on that festal occasion. We are informed that Ashland Is preparing for a grand celebration and we have not forgotten the generous atlvndence that the Ashland people gave lis lust year. All who have sentiments on the Fourth of-July question should voice them soon so Unit the matter may be determined in season. The new mayor and council assumed their tlUcial positions lust Thursday evening. Thete olTlciuls serve the city without pay. Contrary sentiment finds free utterance, It must seem to these city olllcers that theirs is s thsnltlesi task. We In-live it to bean eictptional case when one ol our coiincilmen dues not work con scientiously, according to his light, (or the intercuts ol his people. His efforts should be appreciated and his lunds upheld, General Adna K. Chaffee, who ropra sents us in the Chinese muddle, has stumbled in a manner common with heroes and has talked. General GuBi-lie gave a banquet and smoking concert to olllcers at 1'ekin in the "temple ol Heaven" in honor ol General Chaffee nd his officers. General Chaffee Hindu Swcti to the effect that Americana and Prilishcrs would never face une another on the Held ol battlo and in timated that in the event of the I'nitid Htates intervening in any conflict, it would be for the assistance of tircul llritian and againtt her adversaries.
