Courtesy Allen Fenton The former Fenton Grocery building is a major downtown structure that many want to see reborn. “We’re really trying to fix that place up,” said Weston Roberts, project manager who’s working on behalf of his uncle, building own- er Russell Maize. Maize’s grandfather at one time worked at Fenton Grocery before opening Maize’s Red and White Store in the building now oc- cupied by Main Street Market. His parents eventually had several Maize’s Markets. Roberts and Maize have applied for a grant from the city’s Urban Renewal Agency, which could provide as much as $15,000 to improve the 1925 building’s façade. The grants are one of the ways the city has sought to fix up downtown, the stretch of South Main Avenue from the post office to Fourth Street. The first step for the 10,200-square-foot Fenton building was changing its name from See ‘Fenton’ on Page 4 The Columbia Press Spooks are everywhere for Hallow- een this year, but there are plenty of tame, little-child friendly activities too. Here are some of the highlights for the days ahead. H aunted cove Astoria-Warrenton-Seaside KOA has its annual haunted cove from 6 to 9 p.m. today and Saturday. This year’s theme is “Sleepy Hollow” and includes a headless horseman. It’s a bit less scary before 7 p.m. Haunted cove is open to the public for $3 or three nonperishable food items, which benefit the Clatsop County Food Bank and KOA Care Camp. Those camping at the KOA can participate in a costume contest and site-decorating contest, both at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Big Foot Build- ing. Visitors to the haunted cove must check in at the park entrance, and will be directed to haunted cove. W arren H ouse ligHt sHoW The annual D.K.
