Lady Pros suffer loss to Kennedy New coach preps for Grant Union’s home opener March 17 By Angel Carpenter Blue Mountain Eagle The Grant Union/Prairie City Pros- pector baseball season is just around the corner, with a nonleague home opener set for Friday, March 17, against the Burns Hilanders. New Prospector head coach Dusty Williams is taking the lead this season, and his coaching staff includes junior varsity coach Doug Sharp, who is also assistant varsity coach, as well as Russ Reimers, Brandon Culley, Chris Acker- man and Art Thunell, the Grant Union head coach for 28 years who retired in 2005. Unless Sharp’s junior varsity team is playing out of town or at the same time, he’ll assist Williams at varsity games. Reimers is pitching coach, Culley works the infi eld and Ackerman the out- fi eld, with Thunell as hitting coach, and assisting infi eld and outfi eld at practices. “The coaching staff has been great,” Williams said. “There’s a ton of knowl- edge there. I appreciate their knowledge and input and dedication to the team.” He added the support of the adminis- tration and the community has been pos- itive. His wife, Stephanie, has also been supportive and assisted with inventory. This season’s roster includes 23 boys with fi ve returning varsity players and two seniors. The challenge came after a 44-33 loss to Kennedy in the quarterfi nals. The East Linn Eagles fl ew away with an 18-5 ad- vantage in the fi rst quarter of action. With fairly even scoring throughout the remain- der of the game, the Prospectors could not dig out of the hole. East Linn outshot Grant Union by just one point in the second, 8-7, the third, 8-7, and the fourth, 11- 10. Grant Union head coach Mark Mosley said it See END, Page A10 In Thursday night’s state quarterfi nal match, the Grant Union Lady Prospectors came within six points of the Kennedy Trojans in the fourth quarter before their opponents pulled away in the fi nal minute of play to win 44-33. The Grant Union girls beat the Pilot Rock Rockets 49-42 in the playoffs Feb. 25 to earn the trip to the state championships. Dancers, from preschool through high school age, will present their latest routines this week at the annual Spring Showcase. Performers will delight the crowd at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Grant Union Ju- nior-Senior High School new gym, with admission by donation. The Grant Union Gold dance team will also host a state kickoff dinner at 5 p.m., fea- turing 1188 barbecue pork sliders for $7 a plate; children ages 9 and under eat for free. Presentations will include routines by the Level 1, 2 and 3 dancers and the Gem- stones junior high competitive team. The Grant Union Gold will showcase the performance they will present at the March 16-18 OSAA State Dance & Drill Championships at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. An adult group will also give a special hip-hop presentation at Friday’s Showcase. Ravyn Walker Dayville senior to play softball for Blue Mountain Blue Mountain Eagle Dayville High School senior Ravyn Walker signed a letter of intent to play softball for the Blue Mountain Community College Timber- wolves this fall.
