Union went on to hit a two-pointer and two free- throw shots to end the game. “Tonight’s game was a really tough loss,” said Grant Union head coach Kelsy Wright Saturday night. “Our boys played absolutely great. We ran offenses great. Our defenses were great. We threw three or four different defenses. We did a great job with that.” On their win in Elgin, Wright said his team played well after a rough start. “Having bus legs and sitting in a gym for fi ve hours was kind of tough,” he said, “but we did pretty well going into the second quarter. They had a 38-9 win over Burnt River in Unity on Tues- day, Jan. 10, then beat the Harper Hornets 54-18 at the Dayville court on Friday. “On both days, the girls did a great job at being ag- gressive on offense and not having turnovers this week,” said Tiger head coach Tay- lor Schmadeka. “We hope to carry that over to the games this weekend against Jordan Valley and Adrian, which are both home games, and expect to get two home wins against two very good and high- ranked teams.” The coach said freshmen TREAT YOUR FEET SPORTS SCHEDULE Sport By Angel Carpenter The stakes are high in the Wapiti League, where every win is crucial for the Grant Union Prospector boys as they try to climb higher in the league standings. Grant Union claimed a 49-32 victory on Friday over Elgin at the Huskies’ court, then suffered a painful 40-29 defeat Saturday to the Union Bobcats at the Prospector court. The Bobcats leaped ahead from the start, and Grant Union’s only lead, 6-4 in the fi rst quarter, was fl eeting. At the half, Union led 22- 14. By the fourth quarter, the heated game was in battle mode, as Grant Union worked to whittle away at Union’s 12-point lead from the third quarter. With 1:25 left in the game, and Grant Union down by 36-28, Prospector Zack De- iter went 1-2 at the foul line, bringing Grant Union within six points of their opponents. A11 Denali Twehues and Aubrey Bowlus played very well. “They had strong games and have improved and worked hard in practice and will be a big help this week- end,” he said. The Monument/Dayville girls are currently fourth in league. Big wins push Tiger boys to second in league The Monument/Dayville Tigers logged three wins last week, and the team is current- ly holding the No. 2 spot in the High Desert League. On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Tigers, led by head coach Jeff Schafer, beat Burnt River in Unity, 79-36. They followed up with a 52-35 win over Harper on Fri- day in Dayville. On Saturday, they traveled to Huntington, taking a 66-43 win over the Locomotives. Jordan Valley (5-0 league, 9-2 overall) holds the top spot in league, followed by Mon- ument /Dayville (4-1, 5-9) in second and Prairie City (3-1, 5-5) in third. Grant Union team wrestles 4-2 at Oregon Classic Grant Union wrestlers were up against 16 of the top 1A/2A teams along with 80 others teams competing at the Deschutes County Fair- grounds in Redmond. “We had a great tourna- ment,” said Grant Union head coach Andy Lusco. “We had excellent competi- tion in a dual meet bracketed tournament.” Grant Union finished 4-2 in the competition with a loss to 1A Crane and Cul- ver, the top 2A team in the state. “We finished fifth place out of the best dual meet teams in the state,” Lusco said. “This was an excel- lent result for our relatively young team. Individually, every wrestler in our varsi- ty lineup won at least one match to contribute varsity points.” To start Day One, Grant Union took a tough loss to Crane, 36-32. Grant Union then beat Monroe 48-30 and Myrtle Point 52-22. On Day Two, Grant Union lost to Culver 75-6, then beat Oakridge 45-19 and Neah-Kah-Nie 42-30. Competing and winning at least one match to con- tribute varsity points were: Jesse Paulson (113), Braden Spencer (120), Connor White (126), Damion Young (132), Clay Johnson (138), Jay Goldblatt (145), Eli Carniglia (152), Russell Hodge (160), Hadley Boethin (182), Dillon Maley (220) and Drew Lusco (285). Additionally, Toby Boat- wright, Arron Glimpse, Eli Humbird and Nate Hodge were ready to contribute as well, Lusco said.
