Sept. 7, 1916 Grant County Journal 100 years ago • 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Prairie City The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a free hunting event for youth 17 and younger, beginning at Prairie Wood Products, 457 Front St., Prairie City. Hunter education certifi cate and val- id license required, as well as upland validation for 12 and older. A non-hunting adult 21 or older must accompany. The registration limit is 30. SATURDAY, SEPT. 24 FRIDAY-SUNDAY, SEPT. 23-25 • 12-7 p.m., Monument The event, benefiting the Monument Senior Cen- ter, begins with food booths in the park at noon. A beer garden and music are avail- able at 1 p.m., and a live auction in the park will start at 3 p.m. An elk and salmon dinner, with addi- tional auctions and raffle drawings, will be held at the senior center from 5-7 p.m. The cost for dinner is a suggested donation of $15 per person, $25 per couple and $7.50 for children ages 6-12, with under 6 free. For more information call 541- 934-2244. Prairie boys are pretty much like boys everywhere certain- ly no worse, possibly a little above the average. They need a little looking after, just like other boys. There is a curfew ordinance and they are supposed to be the streets by eight unless they have business or are accompa- nied by an older person. The marshal is making an effort to enforce this ordinance and some of the boys who insist in staying out after hours stand and excellent chance of run- ning foul of him. Considerable mischief has been done by boys this sum- mer, come of it involving quite a fi nancial loss. A favorite pas- time seems to be heaving rocks through windows and this is rather expensive. It is to be hoped that some of this sort of mischief can be stopped. Sept. 15, 1966 Blue Mountain Eagle 50 years ago Wright Wins Rodeo Titles Dayville — Jackie Fair Opens with Parade of 1,000 Children Since the fair was institut- ed in 1909, Educational Day has always been recognized and made a feature of the fair. The 4-H club work has sup- plemented the school work and so combined they make a fair in and of themselves. The fair will offi cially open on Friday morning with the school children’s parade and out of the 1,600 children in the county there will be more than 1,000 in the parade led by the Grant Union High School. The various schools com- pete with their stunts in the parade is held on Saturday at noon and Manager Carl Driskill says that she has ev- ery assurance that there will be a wide variety of fl oats and that they are going to considerable work and ex- pense in preparing them. Wright, an RCA performer from Dayville, is now par- ticipating in the Pendleton Round-Up after winning the bareback riding title at the Oregon State Fair. Wright won the bareback title by taking second in the fi rst go-round, third in the second go-round, split the fi rst and second in the fourth go-round, split fi rst and sec- ond in the fi fth go-round. In the saddle bronc, Wright won fi rst in the fi rst go-round, second in the fourth go-round and fi rst in the fi fth go-round to win sec- ond in the average. At the Bremerton rodeo, Wright won the all around title for fi nishing fi rst in the saddle bronc and second in the bareback division. He was second in the Big Five which ended with the Bremerton rodeo. The St Paul, Caldwell, Nampa and Prineville are the other four rodeos of the Big Five.
