History Blue Mountain Eagle Wednesday, March 23, 2016 A9 O UT OF THE P AST March 23, 1916 Grant County Journal 100 years ago Mrs. Anna Smith has re- ceived letters from H.W. Weath- erspoon, of the State board of Horticulture, and Mr. Hyssop, of the Oregon Agricultural Col- lege, praising some potatoes that she sent to the display made in La Grande during the Home Makers Week. These potatoes also attracted attention from nursery men, and have brought inquiries in regard to how many of them could be obtained here. Seed potatoes free from scab and wilt are scarce this year, and will bring a good price. Mrs. Smith has been enrolled by the Agricultural College on the list of Oregon seed growers. March 21,1941 Blue Mountain Eagle 75 years ago Jail Condemned No federal prisoners can be placed in the Grant County jail. Federal authorities condemned it as a ¿re ha]ard and unsanitary. Nothing especially new about the situation for grand jury, after grand jury hath spoken. It has just the county court on the spot and several plans have been discussed and considered. There are three county of¿- cers without a home; the county agent, the public welfare and the county health nurse. Some plan might be worked to consolidate all of these. If a new jail must be considered then it might be well to build a small ¿reproof building in the corner of the courthouse yard. This will pro- vide for a jail and the of¿ce of the sheriff, and district attorney and maybe the county agent and the others would have room in the court house. Probably WPA funds would be available, in part. It is just a situation and so far no solution has been made. March 24, 1966 Blue Mountain Eagle 50 years ago Fire Ruins Mail Truck No cause has yet been deter- mined for the ¿re that burned a mail delivery pickup truck and a load of mail just east of Monu- ment Monday morning. About 350 letters and an unknown number of packages were destroyed in the ¿re. Ray Lunceford, the driver of the truck, reported feeling heat on the back of his neck. When he turned around he saw the wooden cover on the back of the truck on ¿re. He was unable to save any mail. The pickup, owned by Fred Henslee of Long Creek, was ex- tensively damaged by the ¿re. Lunceford was headed to- wards Monument and Kimberly from Long Creek on the mail delivery. The pickup meets the John Day mail truck at Kimber- ly. March 21, 1991 Blue Mountain Eagle 25 years ago Trevor Knowles captures gold at Nyssa Wrestling Tour- ney Grant County Freestyle wrestlers traveled to the Nyssa Kids Tournament Saturday for competition. There were 350 wrestlers participating. A gold medal went to Trevor Knowles; silver medals went to Dustin Elliott, Pat Gibson, Levi- Weikel Magden and Georgie Gibson; Drew Knowles earned a bron]e. Grapplers will have a week off before their next meet, the On- tario Animal Kids Tournament, which will be held March 30. O utlook SENI R PRAIRIE CITY – As I was listening to the weather forecast, I didn’t think the sports teams for golf, track and baseball had any chance of playing. Why? It was Rose Coombs snowing! We had two inches and that’s not good for golf, track or baseball. But what a difference a day makes, huh? Two days later it is blue sky, warm temperatures and a lovely spring day. Batter up! We had our St. Patrick’s Day meal of corned beef and cabbage. But it was in a soup and it was very good. It was accompanied by a veggie plate of cucumber and tomato wedges, pepper slices and green onions. We also had individual loaves of herbed bread. The dessert was Helen’s famous North Dakota Salad. There were green centerpieces on a green table cloth, as well. Harold and Frances were appropriately attired with special hats. Our four delivery people made it back in fine shape so Buzz could lead the flag salute. Bob McCauley asked the blessing. He also won the $5 gift certificate donated by Prairie Hardware & Gifts. Wanda Kaufman gets to go to Chuck’s Little Diner for a meal soon. Our volunteer servers and helpers included Frances Preston, Julia Davis, Ginger Kendall, Pam Howard, Donna Adams and Linda Boyer. The Grant County Jammers will make another appearance on Wednesday, March 23, at the Center for our Easter meal. Come early to hear more from them. Bruce and Gloria Blume came with his mom, Stella McCauley. They were on their way back to Alaska from Yuma. Now there’s a tour! The Lincare oxygen service representative, Brian Waite, came to eat and offer his services to any who might need it. Lorna and Kendra brought Dorothy Blasing, Marilyn Randall and Lois Hill from Blue Mountain Care Center. So that made 80 names on the book. We are having lots of fun getting the Center arranged for our needs. We found at least six copies of the architects drawings for the “new addition” of 35 years ago. Very interesting. There will also be another table of “flotsam and jetsam” for you to look over and take if you can use it. All the old jigsaws were delivered to Valley View and were greatly appreciated, so I’m told. That’s what we like to hear. Get items to those who can use them. Some of the items that we are NOT giving away are all the old registration books. They will be kept along with the Grange record books in our “new” office. That way, they will be available for anyone to look at. AND I can get my filing cabinet out of the kitchen pantry and the cooks can use that space for cooking stuff. Yeah! Two more women inventors: Florence Parpart, 1914, electric refrigerator; Josephine Cochrane, 1887, dishwasher. Luke 23:3 “So Pilate asked Jesus, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ ‘Yes, it is as you say,’ Jesus replied. John 19:30… ‘It is finished.’ Mark 15:46… So {they}took down the body… and placed it in a tomb… {and}rolled a stone against the entrance…” Remember Easter Sunday- 10:30 a.m. Prairie City School Old Gym for the rest of the story! JOHN DAY – On March 14, we had a smaller than usual crowd but it was cold out so only approximately 24 of us ventured out. There were Alma Joslin 18 meals delivered by Buzz and Bobbie Gilmore and Jeanette Kile with Veanne Weddle delivering 16 frozen meals to shut-ins. Our cook, Shay, is recuperating at home from his surgery so Lisa has taken over the kitchen. She has a new helper, Jill Brown, who will fill in until Shay comes back. Lisa fixed us turkey vegetable soup, chicken salad on croissants, cucumber/tomato salad, potato chips and frosted wafer cookies for dessert. Good job, gals. Our servers were from Redeemer Lutheran Church, consisting of the Gilmores and Jeanette Kile. Bobbie led the flag salute and Buzz asked the blessing. Veanne announced it must have been National Buzz day, as out of 24 people we had three people named Buzz present. She also announced the Lutheran Church will offer a Seder Meal on Maundy Thursday, March 24. Also, a reminder that you need reservations for the Easter Senior meal on March 24 if you want to be sure and have spaces to sit with your group. The reservations are filling up fast so call in. That will also be the day of the quilt drawing and there will be lots of extra door prizes. Bobbie won the Len’s Drug gift certificate and David Pasko won the free meal. On March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, we had approximately 65 diners at the Center, plus there were 25 meals delivered by Sherry Feiger and Jean Willey. We had corned beef and cabbage with potatoes and carrots, whole wheat dinner rolls and pistachio pudding for dessert. The entree was furnished by Scotta Callister and Les Zaitz from Boulder Creek Ranch. Bonnie Kocis and David Pasko greeted us and our servers were from United Methodist Church. Jean Willey led the flag salute and Sherry Feiger asked the blessing. They had a little help serving by Carla and Andy Anderson, Virginia Harris and Veanne. Thanks, everyone. As usual, Karen helped with cleanup. Ron Dowse did the announcing due to Veanne being busy helping in the kitchen. Lisa, our cook in charge during Shay’s recuperation, had to be out of town with her husband who was also having surgery. Our new fill-in cook, Jill, did a good job with the help of Veanne and Danny DePreist. Ron announced Cornerstone Christian Fellowship is having a community Easter service at 10 a.m. on Easter Sunday at the Grant County Fairgrounds pavilion followed by a free luncheon. All are welcome. Redeemer Lutheran Church is having their Seder Meal at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 25. Call for reservations: 541-575-2348 or 541- 575-5840. Norm Fowle then told the story of the beginning of St. Patrick’s Day. Kim Ausland and Linda Christensen brought some of the folks from Valley View to lunch. Attending with them were Chuck Corwin, Dawnelle Hindman, Randy Persinger, Myrtha Fields, Jeanette Walker, Bobby Raider and Norma Rynearson. Glad to see you folks. We also had the card players and three of our local EMTs. Karen Barrietua won the Chester’s Thriftway gift certificate and Jessie Lewis won the Valley View lunch for two. Thursday, March 24, will be our Easter dinner consisting of maple glazed ham, potatoes augratin and a special dessert. Call for reservations. Monday, March 28, we will have chicken teriyaki skewers, rice, Asian slaw and black forest cupcakes. Luke 23:46 “Then Jesus shouted, ‘Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!’ And with those words he breathed His last.” MONUMENT – By the time you read this, I will have returned from my trip to Portland. I went to Portland because I had to do some specific Soo Yukawa shopping and at the last minute, decided to visit the dentist, too. Let me tell you, I dread going to the dentist. I think I was traumatized as a kid. I hardly ever ate candy or cookies as a kid. For one thing, my mother didn’t know how to bake, let alone use the oven. In fact, she still doesn’t know how to use an oven. She uses the oven to store her pots and pans. Well, my parents took me to see this dentist and he basically told my parents I had tons of cavities! I think all my molars have fillings. Personally I think he was a TXDFNDQGPLONLQJP\SDUHQWV for all he could get. That dentist asked me to close my eyes, and needless to say, I peeked and he was coming at me with this huge and very long needle. Did I forget to tell you that I’m also a big chicken withneedles? Oh, and boy did that long needle hurt! So, ever since thatincident, I get really nervous, have shaky hands, and basically freak out when I have to go to the dentist. While we are on the subject of mouths, our mouths and tummies were fed by our hard-working chefs Terry Cade and Christy Howell. They made a very tasty roast pig, potato wedge fries, cole slaw, and peach cobbler. Our greeters were Bob Blakeslee, Bodean Andersen and Marva Walker. Bob led the flag salute, Bodean made the announcements and prayed the blessing over our meal. We had 53 guests and three take- outs. Gary Engle won the Len’s Drug gift card, Judy Harris won the Chester’s Thriftway gift card, and Kristie from John Day won a free meal. We had Ron Dowse from John Day, Tom Campbell from Kimberly, and Jason and Anna Jones from Alabama joined us for lunch. A big shout of thanks to Jason and Anna for serving in our military and country. The rummage sale for the month of May will be run by Judy Harris, Sylvia Cockrell and Karen Stubblefield. All proceeds will go to theSenior Center general funds. So go through all your stuff and bring themon down. ,WVIRUDJUHDWFDXVH Don’t forget the People Mover’s van comes to Monument to take folks to John Day and brings them back home around 3 p.m. Isaiah 40:3 “A voice of one calling: ‘In the desert prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God…’” Prairie City Seniors John Day Seniors Monument Seniors From the March 24, 1966, Blue Mountain Eagle, Phyllis McCarthy, administrator at Blue Mountain Hospital, demonstrates a cycoflush machine — an automatic bed pan dumper which cleaned the pan, a task that was formerly done by hand. By inserting the pan into the machine and pushing a button, the machine had the pan ready to return to the patient’s room in a few seconds.
