Richmond, Commissioner for the State, have spent the summer examining lands in East ern Oregon, and report that of all the alleged swamp lands examined, not over 15 per cent, is actually swamp land, and they believe it will be res tored to settlers. James Collaban met with a very Berious accident while on his way home from Liukville. George Jackson is waging war on the catamounts, having killed four in the past few weeks, at his farm on Rogue river, says the Sentinel. These animals, as well as coyotes, are very numerous here. Fully 500 fowls ami half as many cheep and pigs have been killed by them in Ibis section the ast twelve months. Under an act passed in 1882 the State of Oregon has been endeavoring to collect from the general government money- to reimburse it for expenses incurred in raising troops in 1802 for the late war. It has been found that the act in question is not sufficient, and special legislation will be neces sary. Major Blakeney and Professor Von Beyer have selected a site for the loca tion of the Point Adams Life Saving station, subject to the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury. It is pro posed to provide the new sta’ion with a new life boat of greater capacity than any now in the se.-vice, as well as i self-righting and self-bailing surf boat.
