Profit or loss is made in selling." If so much depends upon the selling it is quite essen tial that a merchant, who wants to be successful, know several things before he undertakes to prepare any advertisements at all. A merchant should know all about each article for sale, as to its usefullness, public demand. and its selling points; conditions os the people he wants to reach; proper time to advertise; and the general principles of advertising as laid down by successul retail merchants. He should bear in mind that more depends upon the strength and clearness of the advertise ment than the virtue of the arti cle itself. Hence every adver tisement before being used suould be put through a proper test to determine whether or not it is efficient About the most feasi ble test to which a. merchant eould put his advertisement is to prepare a number of advertise ments on the same subject mat ter, submit these advertisements to others to be judged if possible, and select the one that would sell the most goods. Thus by a pro cess of comparison and elimina tion a fairjy good test could be made. The big advertiser pays thou sands of dollars for an advertise ment in the big papers and $10, 000 a year to an advertising ex pert who works night and day for some time preparing that ad vertisement. It is neither copied from other advertisements nor prepared in haste. In fact most of the faults of advertisements generally are the "faults of en thusiam, superficialty. haste and inexperience." Every anvertisement should be studied with care and prepared with the feeling that the success of the business depends on that ad. Ceo. E.
