McKinncy wero appointed a committco to wait I upon the county court to enlist assistance in this matter. J. E. Rounseville of Dciu'o suggested a mail route through Catlow valley to proper connections with Denio and the club will take the matter up. The Times-Herald is in receipt of the January number of the "Pacific Northwest" which con tains a fine article from Prof. Thomas Shaw, the great agricul tural expert, who visited us last fall, on the advantages of the Pacific Northwest to the home seeker. It also contains a very complete writeup of interior Ore gon by "Rabbitville" Addison Bennett The "Old Man" starts his article with the sentence that he's going to tell the truth about it and he does as near as Hen nett can tell the truth. He gives Harney county the most complete description every published by a paper in the west as far as we know. "Old Man" Bennett has the thanks of this section for such an article. The time of the annual church meeting was changed to the second Friday night after Now Year. The matter of a new church came up and was discussed at length, and resulted in the pastor being instructed to write the Board of Church Erection asking it to submit plans of buildings and as soon as such plans are re ceived another congregational meeting is to bo called. It looks quite probable now that tho Presbyterian congregation in Burns may hayo a new church homo in the near future. COMMERCIAL CLUB ELECTS. Smyth as tho holdover c ,inmissionor. Judiro Wm. Miller is acting as county attorney. Tho court has n great mass of business to transact at this term and will not completo their work until noxtweok. So far tho most importantorder mado was tho appropriation for tho proposed experiment farm. Tho court took a very liberal viow of this important matter and its nction receives tho com mendation of tho people. Tho appropriation of $15,000.00 for this purpose is a step toward de velopment nnd shows tho pro gressive spirit of tho now court. It is not oxtravnganco in any respect, for it will not likely re quire tho full nmount nnd if it does tho money is well invested as the laud, equipment nnd what ever improvements aro mado be long to the county. Of course this appropriation is conditional, but was necessary at this timo as it is necessary for tho county in which tho experi ment farm is located to furnish tho land and necessary equip ment. Tho nction of tho court is a strong card toward securing tho farm for this county. Tho order of tho court after citing the conditions govorning tho establishment of tho farm says: "And it further appearing that the amount necessary for such equipment is at this time unknown nnd the court appre ciates the necessity nnd gront ad vantage to tho county nnd tho taxpayers generally this farm will mean, and being importuned by a largo number of tho heav iest taxpayers in the county thereto. "It is therefor ordered nnd there is hereby appropriated out of the general funds of this coun ty to be used in the purchnso of equipment for nn experiment farm to be located in this county the Bum of $15,000.00 or so much thereof as is absolutely necessary to purchase such cfiuinment as tho proper authorities deem neces sary for such experiment farm." On petition of forty-six tax payers a road district was cre ated to bo known as No. 5. The boundaries are: Commencing at tho southwest corner township 23, thenco north nlong tho range line between range 31 and 32 to the north lino Harney county; thenco following tho north lino to the northwest corner of tho Drcwsey road district; thence south and southeast along tho Drewsey road district lino to tho range lino between range 31 nnd 35; thenco south along tho rango line to the southeast corner of township 23; thenco west nlong same township to plnce of be ginning. The petitioners also asked for the appointment of Joe Clark as supervisor of said dis trict and ho was appointed for tho ensuing year. Tho report of county expert bterling was approved and ac cepted. It appearing that the work of tho assessor has greatly increased and prospects for a greater in crcaso for tho coming year, the assessor was authorized and em powered to appoint a suitublo person as his deputy between tho 1st dny Feb. and 1st day of Nov. of each year nt a salary of $100 por month. Viewers ordered to proceed to Iny out county road to tho west of Burns as petitioned for by Geo. Young and others. An order wns entered requir ing road supervisors to niako de tailed reports of all work done, showing amounts paid for what, where and when, etc. No now school district may bo created in future during months of July, August, Sept. or Oct. by an order made This is to nro- vent confusion in boundaries. Tho tax levy has been fixed at 10 mills, tho samo as last year. I'cilcrnl Support Admired Por Dry Pnrm. TAo following has justbeen re ceived by this ofllco from tho Oregon Agricultural Collego at Cervnllis: Word has been received by PrcsidontW. J. Letters and telegrams from Samuel Fortior, chiof of tho Bureau of Irrigation Investiga tion at Washington, and from Dr. Carlton, slato that the im propriations for tho work in Ore gon will, in nil probability, bo passed by Congress. Tho plans for tho extension of this work havo already been pre sented to tho Board of Regents of the Collego and havo been ap proved by them. Tho assurances from tho Federal Government that they will bo in a position to co-operate with tho state in this work lenves the matter ready for presentation to tho stnto legisla ture.
