PROFITS is another way of saying CLASSIFIED ADS Call 3824811 -!t The Bulletin, Tuesday, January 21, 1964 Danes have humor, history in abundance By Borgt Mors UPI Stiff Wrlrtr COPENHAGEN (UPI) - The tiny kingdom of Denmark) pro ducer of famous bacon and beauties, has no raw materials but such prosperity that the po litical opposition could find no better slogan than "make good times better. ' And the Panes who inhabit this tight peninsula have humor, history and appetites in abun dance. Denmark is the land of Wil liam Shakespeare's "Hamlet," of Hans Christian Andersen, the famous author of children's I fairv .'tales, and . 'of nlnnler- comedian Victor Borge. And ...many- of its women have be- .. come famous all over the world j.; as models and actresses. i " Danes have a reputation of taking almost nothing seriously except eating. Tourists are i..: introduced to such gourmet's f. delights as restaurants in Co 1 penhagen with menus four feet long. i- Ever since World War I Den- mark has teen a favorite coun--T try of- American tourists, who y swarm here the year round but particularly in the summer. .Tourism contributes Impor tantly to the nation's income and accounts for more than 5 .per cent of Denmark's foreign krone which is valued at a 1 little more than 14 cents, rough- VTJy the same as the British hilling. .".;," Education Is Compulsory Visiting Americans are de--: lighted to find that most Danes except in the remotest farming a- communities speak English. It is a required language in Dan :lsh elementary schools. Educa tion is compulsory and Den- Lmark is highly literate. ':"- The Danes are seafarers and '"' trade keeps them prosperous. ' Denmark's merchant fleet, one 5 of the largest in the world, fol-"-lows the tradition of the Danes' '"' adventurous forefathers, the '"Vikings. y"; Danish ships carry valuable .;.cargoe around the world. Den- ; mark exports more butter and produces more bacon than any '"country except the United States. . The tiny kingdom, only 22 f.5 miles long and 165 miles wide, Vr covers 16,576 square miles, an "n area twice the size of Massa chusetts, but supports a popu f lation of 4,650,000 and finds room for 3.5 million cows, 6 million pigs and 25 million fowl. . '' The nation's farms and her A- merchant fleet, loined in recent ' 5 years by rapid industrialization ! overcame Denmark's complete t lack of raw materials. On a per j capita basis, little- Denmark is j. the. world s greatest trading na- . jio tion. World's Oldest Kingdom The Danes are proud that they ' have the world's oldest kingdom, the world's oldest flag the red and white "Danne brog" and have been under the same royal family for more . than 1.000 years. The king is - Frederick IX. 64. who succeed ed to the throne on the death of his father, King Christian X on Anril 20. 1947. Politically, the King and Par liament jointly share legislative powers, A new constitution, modernizing the one of 1849, was signed June 5, 1963, Den mark's Constitution Day. It made women eligible to succeed to the throne. King . Frederick has no sons. The eldest of his three daughters, Princess Margrethe, 23, is in ''. line to succeed him. . The Evangelical Lutheran is ' the ' established religion, but ..there is complete religious tol . , erance. .The 1960 election, In which ".one party could promise no more than to "make good times better," wiped the Communists out of the Folketing, DenmarK s .. unicameral Parliament, and re ..'newed the pre-war coalition be tween the Social Democrats and . . radical liberals. '.: Except for during the war ".'..years and a short post-war in ' terval, the two paries jointly have governed Denmark since 1929 and created a model Wei ll, fare state. Denmark has public assist .'ance. health insurance, disabil- ' " itv and old-aee pensions, work- .. men's compensation and unem ployment Insurance. - POSTPONES WEDDING -. DEN BURG, Holland (UPD- The civil marriage of A. Boo- saard and Miss J. Bekker was held up because the officiating civil servant's pen went dry and no Ink could be found to : validate the wedding. The ceremony was postponed " long enough for a clerk to go out and by a bottle of ink to sign the marriage licnese. Ailing girl, 16, brought from primitive area CASCADE. Idaho (UPI) -Hazel-eyed Peggy Green, 16, was finally warm and comfort able here today while waiting a doctor's decision on her ail ment. Peggy spent 22 hours in the cold, snow-blown edge of Ida ho's primitive area, between here and Yellow Pine, Sunday night after her father, Leonard, had attempted to rush her to the Valley County hospital. The girl and her father, along with her brother and an uniden tified man, tried to drive the 63 miles from Yellow Pine to Cascade to get the girl to a doc tor. They had used a radio-telephone Sunday to alert the hos pital that the girl apparently suffered from an appendicitis attack. Using two vehicles to. break throuirh the snow, the party be came bogged down early Mon day and was stranded half the night. The girl was put in a pickup truck cab with her father while her brother and the family friend rode in a four wheel drive jeep. Rescue efforts from cascade had failed until a caterpillar tractor belonging to the J. ft. Morgan Logging Co. managed to dusIi a trail through the Yel low Pine road and found the stranded party. HITS LONGSHOT LONDON (UPI) C. Ellis came up with a million-to-one winner in the soccer pools here. He won $35,000 for accurately forecasting six scores in last week's games. His investment was almost 4 U.S. cents.
