12 The Bulletin, Wednesday, August 21, 1963 ANOTHER FOOTBALL TEAM The Bulletin published a pic ture Saturday, August 17, of the Jim O'Keefe family of eight Indicating that he had almost enough for a football team. The picture today shows the Stanley McKinney family of 1837 Har riman In Bend with enough members for a football team plus Television in review Defracfors claimed Odefs lost sfafure by moving to Hollywood By Rick Du Brow UPI Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Play wright Clifford 'Gdets, who died last week of cancer and who had been at work on a new NBC-TV anthology series, was often de scribed by detractors as an auth- or who had lost stature when he J left Broadway for Hollywood. Few writers, in fact, have been . such a constant target. And there was ammunition for his attack ers when they compared the Im pact of some of his early stiige plays with most ot his movies. Vet, aside from the personal tragedy of his death at 57, and despite tho fact Uiat he . had turned out two of Uie 10 tolo- plays he had projected as story editor for the new Richard Boone anthology, it Is a pity he did not have the chance to warm up to Take close look af his ring finger - By Vtrnon Scott ' ' UPI Staff Wrlttr HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - Next time you see Alan Ladd in a V movio take a close look at the ring of his left hand. T : If he's playing a married man you'll notice a chain link wedding band glittering on the finger. If r Ladd is swashbuckling around as ' a single man, you're liable to see any numlier of outsized rings adorning the digit. One thing is certain, you'll never see it naked. , The handsome, long time screen Idol claims he is not superstitious, ' but when it comes to his wedding ring Ladd is a fanatic. Not since his wife. Sue, placed the . ring on his finger during their wedding ceremony in Ti juana 22 years ago has the actor been without It. "When she put lhat ring on my finger I mndo a promise that I'd never tako it off," he said during quiet lunch in Uie patio of his magnificent home. "And I never have." Sue. delighted by her husband's sentiment, said, "I didn't make any such promises. But Alan has given me such beautiful jewelry that I have several wedding bands to wear with various matching outfits." "In one of my first movies I showed up for work the first day and the director told me VI have to take off tho ring," Ladd grinned. "I told him to forget It. "There was an impasse for a while, then one of tho prop men came up with the idea of making a cinmplike ring to fit right over my wedding band. It was a big Indian head ring that hid my own ring completely." Since then Ladd has had a variety of clamps made at the expense of the studios, naturally to cover his wedded status. He has a box full of them. Western rings, signots, college rings, rings with big stones, and rings bearing the emblems of West Point, Uie Navy and the Air Force. In his role of Nevada Srnii'n ior, -me i arpetwiqeers Ladd is right back where he started, wearing an Indian head ring. .'; '! 4sV. i' I the mass television medium with his natural bont for popular play production. First of all, as he liked to point out, he at least had not dehumanized his characters as most video writers have. Second, he had come to roasonable terms with his position as a creator and had himself in perspective not entirely satisfied, but at least clear-eyed and therefore in a mood for work. Third, he was an almost impeccable craftsman no mean quality. Fourth, ho was genuinely enthused about the idea of Boone's weekly television at tempt at a reertory theatre, with its own group. Some of Odcls' obituaries were peremptory. They almost read like reviews. Yet, while there is no need for false praise of the dead, his only crime was that he was not as great a playwright as some people thought he should have been. A man's life is all he has got, and is worth more than a brushoff. Those who have read or seen his plays like "Waiting for Lefty," "Awake and Sing," "Golden Boy", "The Country Girl" and "Tho Flowering Peach" surely can't bo so naive as to think that remaining on Broad way would have changed his bas ic abilities. What he was, was a master of Uie uses of a theatre: he knew how to charge an atmo sphere with electricity; he could excite, stir, entertain, and he had a few ideas. If he was not im mense, he at least left some works to remember. Ho admitted to having yearned to be a significant writer. He ad mitted the machine-like approach of most Hollywood films. "Every body runs to TV," he said, in dicating he might have been bet ter off if Uiero were no film in dustry. But of his movies, lie said: "It's professional work, I'm a professional writer." He knew his position, precisely. Tho Channel Swim: A 90-min-ute special about the lale movie producer, Cecil B.
