-Sell Unwanted Articles Now! For Extra Vacation Cash- The Bulletin, Wednesday, Report from London fails fo mention 'No. 1 topic' By Rick Du Rrow UPI Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP1 NBC TV "Report From" series deals with current topics of con versation in various major cities, an you can imagine with what eagerness I tuned in Tuesday night's show fron London. So far as I know, there hat been only one topic of conversa tion in London this summer and you know what that is. So 1 grabbed a bottle of beer, told the wife I had some serious work to do, locked the door to the study and settled down for a half hour of healthy dissipation, won dering what new tack NBC would take for the saga of Christine, Mandy, el al. Well, first off, there was a re port on the new "pop art" craze which apparently is sweeping fcjndon, and it struck me that this was an ingenious way to ap proach so delicate a subject, though the category seemed to be questionable and a matter of opinion at best. Several artists discussed their work, and there were a number of pretty girls on camera, though no one you would recognize. We were told that there is no Bohe mia under Prime Minister Harold MacmiUan's affluent society and for a moment it seemed we might be circling in on our subject. But thai was about as close as we got. It was most informative to hear of the "pop ai l," but some how there was a vague feeling that a certain major topic of con versation was missing. Well, next up, there was a re port on London's changing archi tecture, and while it is always in- Ebony names top influential U.S. Negroes CHICAGO (UPD-MarUn Lulh er King Jr., Jackie Robinson and James H. Meredith were Included In the list of 100 most Influential Negroes named today by Ebony magazine. In a special edition commemo rating the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Ebony omitted such well-known Negro iiersonalitics . as heavy weight boxing champion Charles (Sonny) Liston. baseball players Willie Mays and Ernie Banks, and entertainer Eartha Kitt. The list of top Negro leaders was not a popularity poll which Ebony said Mays, the San Fran cisco Giants' all-time player, might well head up "hut rath er a list of 'participants' in the strucgle for equality. Ebony said Mays' and former heavyweight champion Joe Louis' "Influence has rarely extended beyond the diamond or ring." Ebony said it also excluded "those celebrities who have let it he known their professional ca reers and the fight for civil rights "don't mix'." The list included: Philadelphia Municipal .Judge Raymond P. Alexander, singer Marian Anderson, author James Baldwin, entertainer Harry Bela fonte. United Nations Undersecre tary Ralph Bunche, Manhattan Rorough President Edward R. Dudley, U.S. Circuit Judge William H. t Hastie: Associate White House Press Secretary Andrew Hatcher, Malcolm X and Elihah Muham med of the Black Muslins, Rep. Adam C. Powell ID-N.Y.) and Carl T. Rowan, ambassador to Finland. In addition there were a num ber of prominent persons from the business world, the arts, edu cation, business and public life. Navy silent on Red ships WASHINGTON (UPO - The Navy maintained silence today on reports that 30 Russian fishing trawlers had been sighted three or four miles off Cape Cod, Mass. When told of the report, a Navy spokesman would say only: "The seas are free." He pointed out that no Objection can oe rauea to the presence of the vessels un less there is grounds for com plaint. One Navy officer, commenting on past activities of the Soviet trawlers, said it is known that some of them carry more elabo rate electronic gear than could conceivably be used for fishing purposes. The gear might be used for monitoring communications, or the flight of missiles off Cape Canaveral, he said. BONE CAUSES DEATH SWINDON. England L'PI Mrs. Olive Baldwin, 64. died 10 days after chicken bone be came lodged in her throat he cause X-rays failed to discover it, the coroner said Tuesday. August 14, 1963 1 tcresting to know what is going on, it seemed remarkable to learn that this subject was of more current interest to the resi dents of that city than other top ics. Anyway, there were some more shots of pretty girls, one In slacks, and there was a look at London's cozy mews cottages and once again, it almost ap peared that we were in for an ingenious method of tackling the real subject at hand. But then we were informed by a British editor that if there is one thing that sums up London's problems (pre sumably in the architectural area), it is Piccaddilly Circus and once again we were light miles from the main topic of con versation on the Thames. Finally, we had a pleasant visit to the nightclub of satire, "The Establishment." And there was an excellent, viciously humorous one-man skit by David Frost, young host of the acclaimed Brit ish television satire show, "This Was The Week That Was." He was razor-sharp as an upper class British gentleman defending fox-hunting by saying: "Fox hunt ing is the only effective way of killing fox." Anyway, the show ended shortly thereafter, and Frost and reporter Joseph C. Harsch were so amiable and adept that one almost forgot that the major topic of conversation in London this summer was missing. The Channel Swim: Writer Ben Hocht and actress Janet Leigh visit NBC-TV's "Today" show next Tuesday. Same day, CBS TV's "Talent Scouts" offers An thony Newly, Paul Anka, Hermi one Gingold, Liberace and Hugh Downs as the introd:cers of new professional entertainers. AU three video networks arc planning heavy live coverage of the scheduled Aug. 28 "March on Washington" which is aimed at gaining support for President Kennedy's civil rights bill. . .A number of same-day spot news specials on the march are in prospect, too. Actor John Gavin will star in a planned one-hour ABC-TV se ries, "Destry," based on the fa mous oldtime movie "Destry Rides Again," a Western with Jimmy Stewart and Marlene Die trich. . .Tentative scheduling has the series on the 1964-63 slate, if it makes it. NBC-TV tills season will air two one-hour specials dealing with uniquely American themes. . .The first, "American Spectacle," about natural wonders of the land and narrated by Van Heflin, is listed for March 20. . .The other, "The Red, White and Blue," will be about patriotism Its past and what has happened to it: this pro gram is set for June or July.
