Those are Three killed, 52 injured as bus plunges ST. LOUIS, Mo. (UPI) A crowded bus with passengers standing in the aisles hit a wet spot and plunged down a 30-foot embankment Sunday. Three per sons were killed and 52 were in jured. Officials feared the loll might be higher, but when the Sceni cruiser was finally righted five hours after the pre-dawn acci dent, the death count was fixed at three. "This (accident) is one of the worst we have ever had," a Greyhound official said. The dead were Jack Wesley, 23, Burdette, Ark., Cleophas Johnson, 22, Ann Arbor, Mich., and Mrs. Jessie F. Matthews, 28, Rapton, Ala., who was traveling with her four children to meet her husband. Two of the children were hospitalized. Ambulances shuttled 28 injured persons to SL Joseph Hospital, Kirkwood, Mo., where 16 were admitted. Twenty-four were taken to St. Louis County Hospital and four were admitted. The driver, Elliott John Smith, 34, East St, Louis, 111., who sus tained only bruises and shock, said the rear of the bus skidded into a large highway sign and spun off the embankment. It slid backwards into a mud-filled ra vine and overturned on its side and top, smashing windows and crumpling the vehicle. Manv of the Injured were among the 15 passengers stand ing in Uie aisles. Tnere were 43 passengers seated. Mrs. Matthews was thrown from the vehicle and crushed be neath it, ' The bus was bound from Mem phis, Term., to St. Louis when it reached a highway curve 22 miles south of St, Louis, where the accident occurred. Horse drags girl to death PF.NDLETON (UPI) An 8- year-old Pendleton girl, Madeline Cyd Maloney, was dragged to death Friday night by a shying horse. The girl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Maloney of Pendle ton, was attempting to mount the horse when it shied and started running.
