Barney Lewis is building a home in Lytic and will occupy it when finished. Just received, at Bend News Co.'s store, a line of tinware, crockery, and notions. It will pay you to see them. 38-39 Chas. Wcislde of Nampa, Ida., was in Bend the first of the week and invested in town property. lit is very enthusiastic over Bend's future. The little infant of Mr. and Mrs Oliver Johnson, which was so ser iously ill, died last Monday. The parents have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. Sylvester and Prince Stn.it will leave soon for Salem where Sylves ter will continue his law studies at Willamette university. Prince will enter the same institution and will take the same course. Arthur Johnson left yeterday mornine tor Portland to take a coarse' in pharmacy. Arthur was undecided whether he would enter a school at Portland or the state school at Corvallis, but will decide later. Rev. Mitchell will leave next Tuesday to attend the synod nt 2?ewberg, Or., and also the presby tery and the 400th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, the two latter events to be observed at Portland. Geo. Jones has bought Charley Ethndgc's outfit and will embark in the freighting business. Mr. Ethridge, who has attended very closely to business during the past five years, is rather run down in health and will take a rest for a while. The Ladies' Library Club has decided to order $10 worth of new books. Hereafter regular meet ings will be held on Tuesday after boob every two weeks, the next oe em Oct. 5. At the meeting yesterday afternoon two new mem bers joined, Mrs. A. M. Drake and Mrs. E. A. Cast. W. J. Hightower, formerly of Bend, and son will erect a shingle aBd lumber mill three miles east of Sedro Wooley, Wash. Two rail roads run directly past the mill and both will put in spurs for its uk The state will soon build a large asylum for the insane near the mill, and the Higbtowers will fur nisu the lumber. A party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Vandeveit, Mrs. W. P. Vandevert and sons Will, George and Claude, and Dr. and Mrs. W. T. Cox started over the mountains Saturday afternoon. George and Claude Vandevert will attend school at Willamette university at Salem; Mrs. Dick Vandevert will visit for some time at Eugene; Dr. and Mrs. Cox will return to their home in New Vork City; and the others, after visiting in the Valley for a short time, will return to their homes in this vicinity. Dr. and Mrs. Cox became so well pleased with Oregon on this trip that, after straightening up business matter in the East, they will return West and take up permanent residence in southern Oregon. Erickson had such serious trou ble, recently abandoned the Erick son ranch and before leaving it is generally supposed com pletely demolished practically every thing 011 the place. According to report of those who have recently returned from the ranch, chairs and other furniture that belonged to Mr- Erickson were completely demolished and broken into small pieces. A strip four and a half feet wide and some eight or ten feet high was knocked out ol one end of the house. A small fence built around the house has entirely disappeared. Nineteen spools of wire and all the machinery 011 the ranch has been taken away, sup posedly by the departing Walters In short, the place Iuh been com pletely dismantled and untold dam age dope, apparently in a malicious, spiteful spirit BOARD OF TRADE BUSY. The Board is making an effort to induce new comers to get into com munication with the papers of their old homes. It is particularly re quested that everyone who thinks he can get a "letter home," des criptive of the Bend country, pub lished, should "get busy." It's the very best kind of advertising. There iu a special school meeting held in Roalsnil Thursday, Sept. 9, (or the election of one director and a clerk. Mr. Ander son was elected director and W. G. Fordhaiu was reelected clerk. Geo. T. Sly, the director wboae term expired June 31, and who was then reelected, resigned and Mr. Wm. Hverintrham was elected to serve the unexpired term. Mrs. Nash and children of Fort Rock passed through Rosland on their wax home today. Joe Tagr-art drove the Silver Iake stage out today for Will Dorrel. Mr. ami Mrs. C R. Clausen ami Mr. Nolan and her son George will leave for California tomorrow moraine. Mr. and Mrs. Prank Rogue left for a visit in the Valley last Wednesday. Win. II. Caldwell left for the moun tains yesterday where he intend to prospect. Mr. and Mr. Lee Caldwell have re turned from Walla Walla, Wash. Rosland, Sent. 18. The engine at the sawmill broke tlown I'riday and will probably keep them from cutting several lays. Work on the new school house will commence in a very short lime. The lumber will be placed on the ground In a few days.
