Only a m atter of m onths, but al ready there is apparent a spirit of apathy as regards our patriotic im pulses. It was only a few days ago th a t a body of persons in Portland passed resolutions condem ning the United States for its stand in the late w ar and In fact condem ning ou r country for alm ost everything im aginable. This 1« not surprising for we have alw ays known th a t there were those whose sym pathies were w ith our enemies, but w hat is sur prising to us is th at the statem ents were given wide spread publicity and yet no counter attack or defense was essayed on behalf of the loyal pat riota. The charges and statem ents are allow ed to stand as a black sm irch against our country. There are many good citizens in eur country who came from those countries which were our enemies in the late w ar. Men and women, who realizing th a t th eir m other country was in the w rong and th at they owed allegiance to the United States, took the rig h t attitu d e during those hos tilities. All honor to them . But foj- those who did not and who still hold rancour in th eir hearts tow ard the nation which is supporting them to day, all shame. It the United States is good enough for th e ir place of business and livelihood, it should command th eir respect and allegi ance. If they still feel th a t the place of th eir birth is th e best and de m ands th eir allegiance, then they, should return to th at place. Ameri ca m ust become a nation of and for true Americans and we cannot afford to-take to our bosom the pois onous reptile of alienists who do not propose to become American. In a few more days we will be celebrating the natal day and every person who lives beneath old glory's folds should ife inspired by the thought th at they are privileged to live in this land of the free and home of the brave. Our history and our governm ent stand unchallenged before the world. We are and should be proud of them. Let’s see to it th a t on this F ourth of July special em phasis is laid upon true patriotism and let us try to inculcate w ithin the hearts of everyone, th at loyalty and respect for our country, which she so justly deserves. We believe th at the F ourth of July a mere Jollification. To th a sm all boy. it is a day for noise and fire works. but even to him it can be more and the noise of th e bursting firecrackers and the flash of the sky rocket across the sky should not be allowed to dim the real purpoee in the day's celebration. The tim e honored custom of the reading of th e declaration of inde pendence and the address of the or ator of tile day should be the im port an t parts of the day’s evbnts. They should im press upon the m inds and hearts of our people th at love of country and- respect for her flag and institutions which she m ust enjoy If she would continue to m aintain her place among the natfbns of the earth. Who can look upon the red. white and blue, know ing all th a t she has done for us in the past to make our lives secure and free, and not feel a real stirring of pride and affection. It is our flag and our country and it is our duty to see th at her wonderful history of the paBt is not blemtshed in our generation. Down through the generations of the past, the flag and the history of country have come to us unblemished and w ith great honor. We take them thus and we m ust keep them thus. Let us see to it th at Am erica rem ains the land of the free and the hpme of the brave. T hat her history continues unsullied and that- she continues to hold her exalted place am ong the nations of earth. This is our heri tage and our duty. We m ust not, cannot f a i l . ------ IM REPLY TO MR. BRADSHAW In answ er to the query of C. W. Bradshaw in another column of this paper, we would say th at the Ber- rians is purely a booster organization and th at so far as we are concerned th e constitution need never be chang ed at all in th a t respect. At the same tim e the B errians would u n doubtedly agree w ith us th a t there are m any ways of boosting. We see no reason why it should be necessary for the constitution to be altered in order th a t th e organisation m ight e ste r into th e work of helping the farm ers m arket th eir berries. Any thing which w ill help th e farm ers will boost the com m unity and the constitution states very Clearly th a t the purpose of the organization Is to boost Newberg and the farm ing com m unity surrounding it. Mr. Bradahay implies in his articls th at there has been an effort on the part of those who originated the Ber rians to restrict its activities to nothing more than im practical ac tivities. As one of the com m ittee who drafted the original constitu tion which was presented to Ithe m eeting of citizens of the com m unity for adoption, we feel th a t we know the inside history of the inauguration of this movement. In draftin g a in s titu tio n , it was felt th a t it would be impossible to enum erate all of tbe varioua,brancbe8 under w hich boost er work m ight be taken up and so the sim ple statem ent th a t th is should be a booster organization was al- Buy the Best Shingles • * the market offers if you want the worth of your money. In fact It has been the intention of those with whom we have conversed and who were instrum ental In organising The Berrians, th at .this should be an or ganization which would do these v e r' things. W ithout attem pt at self eul ogy. the w riter would say th at he probably had as much to do w ith the original organization as did any one person and th at his feeling haa al ways been th at The Berrians offered the com m unity a w onderful oppor-J tunity for cooperating in practical ways. We do not agree w ith Mr. Brad shaw th at city and country Interest are basically opposed. On the con trary they are basically corelated. Each depends to a large degree upon the other and the success of the one will ultim ately mean the success of the other. We adm it th at there are those both in the city and country who persist in adopting this view of the m atter and their persistance in this attitu de makes it more difficult for the others to cooperate as they should. In this connection, it m ight be pointed out th at there have been a few persons who have taken an antagonistic view of The Berriang from the first and who have consist ently refused to become m em bers be cause they stated th at It would not be of any benefit to the farm ers. If the farm ers do not Join th e organiza tion and m ake use of it. of course It wfll be of no benefit to them bu t if they do become members and enter into its activities and let the organ isation know wherein it can be of assistance to them, then The B errians will be of the greatest assistance to tbe farm ers. We do not believe th a t there is any very large num ber of either the farm ers or the city people who take any but the rig h t view of the situation and it is indeed g ra ti fying to note th at a large percentage of those approached have joined th e organization and are taking an ac tive interest in it. Mr. Bradshaw closes his article by urging the farm ers to help pu t th is over and we would add our hearty am en to this. If they will help the Berrians, then The B errians can and will help them. It is co-operation. honors of being -adjudged the best rural new spaper of the state, we were awarded one of th e seven prises. Of course it would have been a greater honor could we bave won the first prist?, but perhaps failure to do so may be accounted for in tbe fact, th at some of the papers com peting entered^ copies especially prepared for the contest while the Graphic simply took a sam ple copy from its back files sending In Its issue of April 28. The new spapers of Oregon are doing a greater service for the farm ers of the state th an la generally realized. They devote large portions of their space to rural news and various phases of ru ral activity. Almost w ithout exception, the weekly pa pers of the state are vitally Interest ed in the success of the farm ers and a^e striving to do everything in their power to aid them. The Graphic is laying special em phasis upou farm life and farm news and hopes in this way to build up the best country newspaper tn the state. In doing this we ask the cooperation of the farm ers. If you have any suggeetions or Ideas along this line, don't fail to let us hear from ypU. The Telephone-Register lam ents the fact th at Dayton. Newberg and other sections of Yam hill county failed to vote the bonds for the 8her- idan-W tllam ina highw ay. Doubtless there were many things which enter ed into the voters’ consideration of the m atter besides tbe question of the county's need for good roads. Tbe Graphic does not doubt th a t the peo ple of W illam ina and Sheridan need the im provem ent, nor th a t they are entitled to it. and had we been privileged to cast a vote at the last election, we should probably have cast it in favor of the bonds, but M cM innville connot get aw ay from th e fact th at it has been a real fight on the part of any other section of the county to get money for improve m ents which would not directly bene fit the county seat town. This is a bad policy. As the Telephone-Regis ter points out, we should have a bet te r spirit of cooperation between the various sections of the county than exists at present and whenever Mc M innville wakes up to tbe fact th at she is not the whole county, we may bave it. We helieve th a t all of the sm aller places of the county could easily get together on these m atters, but unfortunately McMinnville sets tight. Newberg. for instance needs to have tbe strip of road between the city lim its and the W illam ette river bridge taken cars of, but the coun ty cannot see that It would benefit them to take care of this stretch of road which is at present almost impassable. Many sections of the roads about Newberg are almost impassable during the w inter sea son, but It is useless for the people living on these roads to put their case before the officials for they get no help or at least very little. Mc M innville cites the fact th at Dayton got her highway, but she does not say th at McMinnville was afraid of losing trade from th at place to New berg unless she did give way to Day- ton and put through the highw ay between Dayton and the county seat. These petty jealousies should be over come, and whenever they are. there will be a better chance for commun ity cooperation throughout the coun ty In the effort to get better roads in the various communities.
