IS IS w hich has Just passed Into
h isto ry h as been a successful one
for th e Com mercial C lub In m any
respects. The activ ities of th e o r­
g an isatio n have been varied and a
fin e su p p ort has been accorded It
by a larg e percentage of Its members.
T h e m em bership h as been Increased
by a good num ber of new m em bers
a n d by th e re tu rn of our boys from
overseas service, and I tak e this op­
p o rtu n ity to offer them a royal wel­
come to o u r body again.
T he fin ancial condition of th e
club Is sound a n d th is is an o th er
testim o n ial of the splendid support
th a t h as been given it d u rin g th e
la s t y ear as w ell as In th e preceding
«mes. T he dues from th e m em ber­
ship a little b etter th a n pays the
o p eratin g expenses of th e organiza­
tio n and th e general fund is steadily
Increasing. T here bave been sev­
eral so licitatio n cam paigns during
th e y ea r In th e In terest of the town
and com m unities about us and the
public h as generously and splendidly
rallied to every cause th a t has been
espoused.
One am ong th e im p o rtan t accom­
plishm ents of th e club d u rin g the
y ear was securing th e A nnual Re­
g a tta of th e P o rtlan d Motor Boat
Chib w hich was largely attended
and g re atly enjoyed by our tow ns­
people contiguous to N ew berg." It
w as a d em onstration of fine sport-
m an ship and th e personnel of the
M otor B oat Club was in te re stin g and
d elig h tfu l. It Is pleasing to note
th a t a fte r all expenses for th is event
w ere paid, a su b stan tial sum is still
in o ur trea su ry , know n as the re­
g a tta fund, for th e prom otion of
th is event d u rin g the sum m er of
1*20. I believe th is event can be
and each year it will grow and be­
come more a ttra c tiv e , th u s b rin g in g
la rg e r num bers of people to New­
b erg for th is occasion, and m a te ria l­
ly help in the developm ent of th e
•ttjL ----
A nother m a tte r of g reat Im por­
tance to th e city was the building of
th e tem porary bridge across the
gulch a t Second stree t.
The ad­
v an tag e of th is bridge d u rin g the
seven m onths' period the new bridge
h as been under construction has
been of immense value to the busi­
ness In terest of the town and g reat
convenience to the trav elin g pub­
lie. The finances for th is project
w ere raised under the auspices of
your club and the response from the
public to th is appeal was spontane­
ous and refreshing. The bridge ha9
m any tim es over Justified the ex­
pense.
* The club, as usual, has been ac­
tive in effo rts to b e tte r th e road
conditions and m any im portant m at­
te rs have been handled through th e
organization th a t have been of Im­
m easurable benefit to th e com­
m unity.
A nother m atter of considerable
im portance th a t has had the active
a tte n tio n of th e club Is a suitable
- p a r k - f o r - t h e t o m ^ T his m atter has
not progressed fa r enough to make
* com prehensive report, and this
should be continued by, the o ffic e ’s
of th e o rganlatlon. An a ttra c tiv e
park, well located, a form of play
ground for ourselves and visitors,
would be a valuable asset to the
com m unity and so w orthy a cause
should receive the undivided sup­
port of every citizen.
P erm it me a t th is tim e to hum bly
offer a few suggestions for the e n ­
su in g year. Every road leading to
N ew berg from all directions should
be m arked w ith conspicuous and
eom pelllng signs, giving directions
and distances to Newberg, and a
goodly sum spent on th is project
would be of Incom parable value to
th e tow n.
The developm ent of the road
lead in g to th e top of Chehalem
M ountain would tap a splendid
co u n try th a t is close to Newberg and
^properly belongs to Newberg. I be­
lieve it would be a paying Invest­
m en t If the club and town would
give fin an cial assistance to th is pro­
ject for th e poselbilltlee in the_de-
velopm ent of th is road are very
g re a t in addition to th e com m ercial
value It w ill unquestionably lead i t
ea e of th e most beautiful seenie

ly abused by overloading these
tru ck s as the h ard surfaced h ig h ­
ways a re not constructed fo r exces­
sively heavy tonnage. It m ight be
well to recom m end to the C ounty
C ourt th a t th is body look in to th is
m a tte r w ith the idea of re stric tin g
th is tra ffic or a t least enforcing th e
Inw to th e end th a t th e public roads
may not be destroyed.

R. M orris, deputy sh eriff, who took
him to M cM innville w h ere he was
placed in ja il to a w a it th e action of
th e g ra n d ju ry .

was discovered an d in try in g to lo­
cate th e leak ,tb e fact th a t Mr. P e t­
erson was alleged to be th e p rin ci­
pal in some shady autom obile deals,
made th e firm suspicious and they
p u t th e case in th e h an d s of the
B u rn s agency, of P o rtla nd. -

for Econom y,” he indorsed it w ith
tru e sin cerity , and because of th a t
sincerity, he decided h is Rolls Royce
autom obile m ust be replaced by a
sm aller and m ore economical car.
So h e cast his eye ab out in search
of one th a t would be low in p u r­
chase price and low in upkeep. T he
m akes of ears b earin g those v irtu e s
were few.

T he Young L adies’ Glee Club of

W hile th e announcem ent of th e
death of A rth u r J. R u p ert, w hich
reached N ew terg on F rid ay m o rn in g
of last week, was a severe shock to
everybody who had learned to a p ­
preciate w h at he h ad been do in g
for th is com m unity, i t was n o t *
surprise to a num ber who had know n
for several days th a t his d eath w s a
near at hand.
Mr. R itpert had been in a P o rt­
land hospital for several w eeks be­
ing treated for a com plication o f
diseases a risin g from som e form o f
stom ach and bowel trouble, and th e
end came on T hursday n ig h t of la s t
week. H is age was ab o u t 50 y e a rs
and he left a wife, tw o d a u g h te rs
and one son, th e la tte r a young m a n
of 18 y ea rs who h a s w orked in tiro
cannery here a t tim es d u rin g tiro
past year.
Tbe R upert e sta te is estim ated a t
*150,000 and by a w ill m ade d u rin g
his sickness, M r.' R u p ert provided
for th e h an d lin g of th e estate by a
tru st fund for six years, w h e n , tiro
h eirs will all become of legal age.
Mr. R u p ert was a m an of fin «
executive ab ility and w as not o n ly
able to a ttra c t to him self and in te r­
est men of cap ital, b u t he had a.

BILL BENEKE IN TROUBLE

deputy sh eriff, and a search m ade a t
the residence of Mrs. Beneke, th e fos­
ter m other of “ B ill" Beneke, on th e
corner of F ifth

streets, when a num ber of a rtic le s
were found in B ill’s room th a t M r.
Hodson recognized as having come
from his store.
On being cornered the young m an
adm itted th a t he had tak en th e a r ­
ticles from th e sto re w hile in th e
employ of Mr. Hodson. He was a r ­
raig n ed before Ju stice C h u rch ill
w ho bound him over to the g ra n d
Jury and in d efau lt of a *200 b o n d ,
which was required, he was tak en
to M cM innville and placed in jail.
Young Beneke worked in th e
P arlo r P harm acy for some tim e tw o
or th ree years ago but has been
about P o rtlan d for some time. R e­
cently he w ent to work ag ain fo r
Mr. Hodson.
