There le Little Danger These Days of Them Being Stolen. The British crown jewels are guarded in the Tower o f London. At great cost the section o f the tower wherein these famous gems are kept has been made impregnable' against all robber«, At a given signal all the gatea and doors of the tower would be instantly closed and that by the simple pressing o f a button. But tons are placed in the governor’ s room at Scotland Yard and at other points known only to a few respon sible officers. Even the massive gates of the middle tower, which weigh several tons, may be closet by electrical procesé in order than no one within the tower may pasa out. At the same time there woult ring an alarm bell to warn the ward ers, police and soldiers to prepare themselves for any emergency, In other days several attempts were made to steal the crown jewels. A Colonel Blood actually succeedet in getting possession for a time o f the crown and scepter o f the Unit ed Kingdom. This he did by over powering and binding the kee The latter, however, contrived to raise an alarm and, help arriving from an unexpected quarter, Bloo< was pursued and overtaken, but not before he had got clear o f the pre cincts o f the b u ild in g, with his precious booty. It was this attempt ........................... pt that led to the adoption o f an elaborate series of precautions to guard the treas ure. There is a special military guard o f picked men, who give and receive a countersign that is chang ed every four hours. In addition, aside from the electric alarm aya- | tem mentioned above, there is ! rigid system o f visiting patrols, etc. The most valuable o f the jewels are secured by a massive iron grat ing, the keys o f which are held by the lord chamberlain, out of whose custody they are Supposed never to pass. Curiously enough, this ap parent superfluity of caution once nearly resulted in the destruction o f the entire collection by the great fire that threatened the tower in 1841. The flames had attacked the jewel house itself before the keeper succeeded, with the aid o f a crow bar, in forcing an admission to . the house, so he might hand out the jewels to the firemen and police in waiting.— New Y ork Presa. f T— ■ By the Sack or Ton.
