L a s « . _ An effort to determine the value ot windbreaks on farms Is being made by tha Forest Service o f the United Statee Department o f Agriculture. A t pree d it windbreaks ere planted haphazard and many do not believe In them, so it Is time w ei had some definite informa tion on the subject. I f there Is a par ticular kind o f tree that makes a bet ter protection to crops without doing any harm we should know it. The Forest Service proposes to find out Just how much. If any, and when wind breaks increase crop yields. Instru ments w ill be used to measure beat and cold, moisture and dryness, both above and below ground; to register tbe force of tbe wind near the windbreaks and some distance a w a y ; to measure light Intensity and take note o f the effects o f shade; to register frosts at different distances from the trees and to keep account o f the effect o f windbreaks on the snow which covers tbe ground to leeward In winter. Many other meas urements and tests will be made and elaborate data w ill be collected by ex perts who w ill have charge o f the in vestigation. Corn will be tbe first crop studied behind windbreaks. Corn Is a particularly good crop to experiment with because It Is easily Injured by hot, dry winds, w ill not stand shading and Is very sensitive to frosts. I f It is found, as Is generally sup posed, thst windbreaks are a decided advantage to crop yields, it w ill be an easy matter for tbe farm er to plant trees In bis fence rows or along the sides o f his fields toward the prevail ing winds and thus protect his crops as well as produce a valuable crop o f tim ber. In view o f the fact that our tim ber supply is rapidly waning, It stands every farm er la hand to .{ilaut some trees and to maintain the wood lots ni>on bis farm, so If jvindbreaka can be used to advantage, he can easily make the trees he plants serve a double pur pose. The results o f the investigation will be awaited with in terest— Farm e rs Guide. F o w l«.
