The state fair which meets the first week in September is being well advertised and an effort is being put forth to make o f it a successful fair. This is an all round good crop year and there is certainly enough stuff in the country to make an excellent showing in the agricultural de partment. Occasionally we hear of people w ho say they “ wouldn’t think o f subscribing for the Graphic” and yet they will walk a half mile on a hot day to borrow a copy o f the paper of a neighbor in order to get to lead it. Well it is worth something to hear that they want to konw what the Graphic says and it is exceedingly kind in their neigh bors to lend them a good family newspaper. Such high class reading matter will in time help them to overcome their preju dices. In almost every community there is a class o f people who want full liberty to curse and dam churches and church influ ences, they want to engage in everything that has a tendency to break down the Christian Sabbath and in fact they insist on throwing their whole influ ence by word and deed in the way of every effort that is put forth to raise the moral stand ard of the community. And yet if they could see the day when the doors o f the churches should be closed; when everybody, in cluding preachers went to Sun day ball games and yelled like Comanches and bet on the game; when everybody including the women drank beer “ when they felt like it;” when it was a com mon thing to hear people curse and dam everything good and praise everything o f and evil and immoral tendency; yes if these fellows could see such a change brought about that conditions would harmonize with their pres ent desires, judging them by what they say and by their ac tions, it is safe to say that they would be filled with utter dis gust at their surroundings, that they would say that it was to o tough for them and they would pack their grips and flee from such cursed conditions. It is simply a case where a few fellows in a community want to reserve to themselves the right to raise a little hell on earth all to them selves, but they insist on push ing themselyes in among people who are striving to make moral conditions better, in order that they may not get to o near the “ dead fine.” Does anybody be lieve that these are overdrawn conclusions? An editor may go on for years trying to live a deeent and help ful life, and may say hundreds of pleasant things about people w ho meet him in a friendly way daily, and they accept it as all right, but it he happens to print something they misunderstand or something that does not agree with their views, some o f them feel justified in abusing him pri vately or publicly worse than they do any enemy they may have.
