His fellow-citizens o f the Sunflower State looked on in amazement and the Nation with undisguised astonishment while F. D. Coburn, agriculturist and author, with this explanation, de clined the proffered seat, bowed himself out o f the Governor’ s presence and drove back to his i farm. —Oregonian. UN If early grooming is the thing the demo- m ost to be desired by the it to have cratic party they ought Bryan in pretty fair condition tor the race in 1908. The necessity for morning and evening fires and the pleasure of them, makes the Willamette val ley about the best summer resort to be found on the map. It is now, without doubt, evi dent to the liquor dealers asso ciations in Oregon that when it comes to a battle o f ballots, all the majority o f the voters desire to know is to ascertain what the liquor men want in the way of legislation and they will vote the other way. The cause for occasional sick ness resembling poisoning among consumers o f canned meats is no longer an unsolved mystery. The recent investigations made by direction o f the government make it plain that any one who attempts to feed on the vile stuft put up by these big canning es tablishments and sold under the label of "canned meats,” should first provide himself with a cop per lined stomach and take out more life insurance as well. Why is it that when connty of; ficials meet to consider matters o f interest to the people, Yam hill county is seldom if ever rep resented? A few days ago the assessors of the counties along the lines o f the Southern Pacific met at Albany tor the purpose ot fixing a uniform rate o f railway assessment, but as usual Yam hill county was not represented It would be worth something, at leqst, to let the public know that Yamhill is still on the map. ; There are some lies that are to o contemptible to notice, es pecially when they come from those vyho pose as God-fearing men and teachers o f morality.— Polk County Observer. ^There is evidently some o f the same brand o f sanctimony in Polk which has been pretty much in evidence in these parts of late in certain quarters. N6w that the election is over the time-worn exhortations about "standing up lor principle” and “ voting as you pray” may again be expected from such sources. But it w on’t wash. And this is no reflection on those whose motives are pure and above reproach, who have not substituted prejudice lor con science. The quartered apples strung on a string and dried around the fireplace and the strips o f beef dried in a similar manner, in the days o f our sires, may have needed a little extra washing be fore being placed on the table, but since the government investi gation of the meat canning plants has been made public, what can be said for the mess of stuff that is being put np and sold to an unsuspecting public under high-toned labels? When * you are going on a picnic you will d o well to cut ont the brought on "pressed chicken” and "deviled ham,” although it must be admitted that the lat ter, especially, is very properly named. Stick to home grown feed and hold your no9e until the investigations are over. l Who shall say that there is nothing new under the sun? In Kansas they have a man who» being offered a seat in the United States Senate to fill the unex- pired term o f Senator Burton, refused the proffer for the reason that his inclination did not lead him that way, and he doubted his ability to adapt himself to the ^political requirements o f the po- Linn and Lane will be "dry” after July 1. All the drummers will have to come to Salem to spend their nights.—Statesman. A similar remark was made to a drummer a few days ago in the presence o f the writer when the insinuation was resented in a very positive and emphatic answer. The traveling man said that men o f his class search o f “ boozer” stations when night overtook them but like any other class o f men they wanted to find a hotel where they could get a clean bed and “ good meal. The old gag that drummers w on’t stop over night in a town where there are no saloons is badly shop' worn in these days when the representa tives o f the big wholesale houses are made up, as a rule, o f men o f families who stand for something more than "booze.” The injustice o f our govern ment in its failure to keep its contracts with poor Lo, is again called to the attention o f ‘the public by the recent action o f the senate in passing a bill appropri ating $1,500,000 for the pay ment to the Colville Indians ot this amount for surrendering the north half o f their reservation. For sixteen years the matter has been before the authorities and the treaty was made with the Indians so long ago that no doubt few of those who were witnesses to it remain on this side o f the happy hunting grounds. And to add insult to injury, just at the last minute an amendment was slipped into the bill allowing $150,000 o f the amount to be paid to ten attor neys w ho claim that they were instrumental in getting the gov ernment to keep its agreement with these people. When the history of onr treatment o f the Indians is written, the page on which is recorded the beta or able dealings o f William Penn will alone be the record o f promises immediately and faithfully ful filled. As the ballots were taken from the boxes and the names reeled off by the judges it was seen that all kinds o f people had marked their ballots in all kinds o f ways, seemingly without any regard for the principles for which they had been contending. It was to be presumed that the prohibition party people, who claim to be the only simon pure reformers on earth and who as sert that the claims o f all others are as sounding brass, would strike one against every whiskey man on the ticket, but p ot so. Many of them started in by vot ing for Chamberlain and going on down the list they "tabooed” the men who talk temperance but who are n ot enrolled as pro hibition party men, and they did this in cases where they had no opposing candidates o f their own Hunsaker It 1 blk 4 Court add to McMinnville $410. COMPANY SUMMER W AISTS i li One man who is much talked about just now, went out and talked local option from the ros trum, while his private utter ances regarding candidates were at such variance with his public talks that he has lost favor with many o f his own people. Great is politics in Oregon and Yamhill county voters were not a whit behind those o f other sec tions o f the state in making ac at the robatic performances at the bal lot box. The antics o f the wheel o f for tune in Oregon politics is rather an interesting study since the tally sheets o f the recent election have been footed up and the re sults announced. Let’s see—the liquor dealers’ amendment to the local option law was snowed under to the tune ot some 10,000 majority and eight whole counties and many precincts in other counties were voted dry, which will result in the closing o f some 200 sa loons. So far this has the right ring but what did these same prohi bition voters do when it came to marking their ballots for the election o f governor? Here were tw o men heading the tickets o f the tw o great parties, one a high type of Christian gentle men, with excellent qualifica tions for the office, a temperance man and a strong supporter of the local option law, while the other, the present governor, is anything else but a temperance man, either in precept or exam ple. In fact his conduct on more than one occasion, while under the influence of liqnor, has been such as to bring discredit on the office which he holds. In choosing between these tw o men did the reformers vote tor the temperance man? Not much. At least a sufficient number of them threw their votes to Cham berlain to give him a comfort able majority. Getting a little nearer home, Yamhill county was voted dry by 260 majority while good tem perance men were turned down, and patrons ot saloons were ele SAVE TH E FREIGHT W E ARE SELLINO LIS K W A R E For your Kitchen A SPECIAL W ORD i j Utencils. 4 Unless the delicate, exactly ad justed parts o f a watch are kept dean and lubricated, they are certain to become worn to a greater or less extent and the qiovement will surely lose its ac curacy.
