WOODWARD. Editor W . C. WOODWARD $1.00 Per Y ear in A dvance. THÜR8DAY, JULY I*. 1 * » The Oregonian who has no prospect ot visitors this year must be short on cousins, uncles and aunts. Owners o f surplus dogs will do well to have them ripe about the first week in August as that is the date set for the arrival o f the Igonrotes from the Philippines. The appointment o f Elihu R oot to the office o f Secretary of State will be no experiment as he has been tried in responsible positions and found to be a man ot great ability. It is to o much to expect that he will measure up with John Hay, a man o f special native ability and long experience in this special work, but he is a safe man for the place. Newberg rind Dayton have better and more extensive ex hibits at the Fair than has any other part ot the county, and neither place has drawn a cent from the county tund to pay for collecting the same. If all parts o f the county will show equal ublic spirit and interest, Yam- ill county will have one o f the best displays at the Fair.—Tele phone Register. And this reminds us that New berg has done less growling about the management o f the county exhibit than some other towns that have furnished very little for the county exhibit. It pays to “ saw w ood” with the hands and use the mouth less when you want to show your products. - K The Amity correspondent o f the Telephone Register says: “ It w as with much regret that the people o f Amity learned that the Amity Advance had suspended publication. It was a newsy, up to date paper, and one ot which the Amity people were justly proud.” They were prob ably so proud of the papier that many o f them would walk sev eral blocks in order to borrow a copy o f a neighbor to read, but that sort ot appreciation don’t circulate at par when printers bills are to be paid. It had been supposed that all the hogs w'ere in the clover patch about the state capital but it appiears that a few shoats are digging fern roots around the seat ot government o f Yam hill, judging from the following item from the Telephone Regis ter: The attempts o f a few own ers o f springs to “ hold up” the city by demanding an unreason- ble price tor the right to use the water, are only standing in their own light. The city was willing to pay any reasonable price but when an owner asks more for a single spring than he has been asking for bis whole farm, the water commission “ balked.” Fortunately for the city, other sources o f water supply are available, and the owners ot the springs will prob ably not feel grateful to their advisors who told them to hold for the exorbitant price. Visitors at the Lewis and Clark fair who have attended the other big expositions speak, almost without exception, in the highest terms o f our fair and say that for the scope it is in tended to cover the arrangement and general effect has never been excelled. In comparison with the St- Louis .fair it seems to give more general satisfaction, unless it be tor the class who had plenty of time and money to spend at the mammoth exposi tion where the "sh ow ” was so extensive and spread over so much ground that it could not be seen with any degree ol satis faction, short o f tw o or three weeks. Nature has done much for the Lewis and Clark Fair — — — 1 ' Within a very few days the special edition o f the Graphic will be mailtd to our subscrib ers. After beginning the work o f preparation for the edition it grew on our hands to such an extent that we were compelled to add twelve pages in order to cover the ground we had out lined and the added work has made the date o f issue later than we had intended. The price will be ten cents a copy if taken from the office or fifteen cents mailed to any address. Those who have seen specimen pages o f the edition speak in very high terms o f the quality o f the work and it is with a degree o f satisfaction that we place it in the hands of our readers. It has not proven a money making proposition but if it meets the expectations o f a discerning public we shall be sa tisfied. We hope yon will look it through from cover to cover and if you think it will interest your friends and give them cor rect information regarding our resources come in and buy a number of copies and send them broadcast to speak a word for Newberg. Coming out on the train from .Portland on a hot, Sultry even ing last week, a lady passenger, a San Francisco school ma’am 'V who was on her way to Dallas to spend Sunday with friends, made the remark, *as the train glided along the banks o f the Willamette, “ I am loyal to dear old California but I do love the green trees and the cool running water.” Then another Califor nia lady who sat besjde her said “ Oh yes this is just lovely. We need water in California to freshen things up.” Other excla mations ot jo v and gladness were made as the train followed the winding track along the river’s bank and the touristscon- tinued to feast their eyes on the ever changing scene of water and woodland. T o those of us who have looked upon these same bits of woodland and river, year after year, they appear al most commonplace and it is well for us to get out from home and away from Oregon scenery oc casionally and make' compari sons, in order to more fully ap preciate the kindly hand o f na ture in fashioning the landscape o f this great state o f ours where so much has been done to please the eye o f man. t V sine the exhibits palaces are not kept open in the evenings. * Charles G. Kilpatrick, whom the Exposition is paying $500 a week for thrilling bicycle and automobile feats, will perform his daring ride down a long flight o f steps on a bicycle every day and his even more exciting ride up a steep ascent and down ag a in ' in an automobile. Kil patrick is a one-legged man, his performances are free to all, and are given in the afternoon and evening every day.
