Kan., today while running at the rate of 40 miles an hour. The engine and the rear car, a Pull man, alone retnained upright on the track. The baggage car, mail car, smoker and a chair car were thrown in to the ditch, turning over and were badly shattered. One person was killed and 13 injured, one seriously. The wreck was caused by the snap ping of a rail, due evidently to the se vere cold weather of the past week. Physicians reached the scene promptly and a relief train was hurried from Osa- watomie, starting east with the injured during the afternoon. At the time of the accident the train was two hours late and was making up time. It had no orders to stop at Miller and went by at full speed, being derailed on the outskirts of the town. The engine and tender passed over the defective rail safely. The front trucks of the mail car jumped the track and crashed into a freight car on a siding. The baggage car followed, pushed the mail car at right angles across the track and both the forward cars served to block the smoker. The chair car following the smoker partially telescoped the smoker and the latter was rendered into kindl ing wood. The Pullnan remained on the track and aside from a severe shak ing up the passengers in that car were uninjured. . WAR IN A MONTH. MINERS ENTOMBED Determined to Have a Force o a t l e Isthm us. BESIDES TO SEND AN EXPEDITION AGAINST PANAMA. General Reyes Largely His Government That Am ericans Will Only Keep Troops Ont of Canal Zone —Crowd of Indians Attem pt to Sur prise American Onnbeat* Panama, Feb. 1.—News has reached here from Bogota that, inasmuch as Generals Reyes and Cavallero have as sured Colombia that the United States will only object to her landing forces in the canal zone, the Colombian govern ment intends to organise and send an expedition against Panama. The only explanation of this news from Bogota is that the government Colombia ia compelled to take some iteps to prevent its downfall. This said to be imminent, as President Mai roquin baa lost all the prestige he ever bad. There is much speculation in Bo gota as to tbs outcome of this move should it be put through. People ahriving here from Colombia declare the situation in that country is growing worse every day. Try to Surprise Americans New York, Feb. 2.—This cable dis patch was teceived hqre last night from an official source in Bogota, according to the Sun: . • • • “ The government is belf>le*s in ita efforts to prevent war In less than a month from now 10,000 men will be on the isthmus.” This information confirming rumors cabled from Panama yesterday that Co lombia intends organising and sending an expedition against Panama, comes as a surprise, in view of the changed attitude of the Colombians who had ap parently accepted the inevitable and depended on General Raphael Reyes, the special envoy to Washington, to save what he could from the wreck, says the Sun. General Reyes was to have sailed yes terday for Barranquilia an the steamer Valencia, but for the second time he deferred his departure. General Pedro Nelispino and Dr. Lucas Cabellero, col leagues of General Reyes on the Colom bian mission, sailed on the Valencia. The story continues: > >. On seemingly good authority it is said that General Reyes lemains here because his negotiations with the state department at Washington have not been completely broken off and that he has a tentative prbmise from this gov ernment that Colombia will be taken care of with a pecuniary halm for her injured feelings. No comments could be solicited from General Reyes at the Hoffman house last night on the threatening dispatch from Bogota. EXPLOSION OP GAS 1 CAUSES DEATH: OP NEARLY 200. Pittsburg, Jan. 27.—From all th at can be gathered at this hour, between 180 and 190 men are lying dead in the headings and passageways of the Har wich mine of the Allegheny coal com pany, at Cheswic, the result of a ter rific explosion today. Cage after cage has gone down into the mine and com» up again, bat only one miner of all those that went down to work tbia morning has been brought to the sur face. The rescued man is Adloph Guina, and he is still in a semi-con- scions condition at the temporary hos pital at the rude schoolhonse on the hillside above the mine. In addition to the miners who were at work when the explosion occurred, it is now believed by practically all of the men of the rescue party who have come up the 220-foot vertical shaft for a warming and a breathing spell that 8elwyn M. Of those in the mine all are probably dead. The explosion occurred at 8 :30 o’clock this morning, and the first warning was the sadden nimble under the ground and then a sheet of flame fol*- lowed up the deep shaft. Both mine cages were hnrled through the tipper, 20 feet above the landing stage, and the three men on the tipple were hurled to the ground. A male was thrown’ high above the shaft, and fell dead on the ground. The injured men were brought at once to this city, where twe of them have sines died. As soon as the nimble of the explo sion and the crash at the pit month startled the little village, the wives and children of the men below rushed to the scene of the disaster, but to gain no encouragement. There was no way to get into the deep workings.
