Umatilla county farmers have com
plained during the present season that
they have experienced difficulty in keep
ing harvest hands at work. Men fre
quently hired for the entire season, and
then , after laboring for a week or even
less, came to town and refused to work
long r. Knowing that men were scarce,
the harvest crews made demand for
higher wages, and, in the most instances,
received them.
The farmers declare that the experi
ence of the present season will probably
cause ¡he more general use of th - com
bined harvesters, which cut, thresh and
-ack the grain all in one process. These
aebines perform a larger amount of la-
u measure in grain threshed, than do the
older methods of harvesting. Although
t he combine leaves the land in fouler con
dition than when it is gone over by the
header, the trouble in retaining men in
the fields i8 60 great that the combine’s
use will be justified.
The disposition on the men’s part to
break their contracts and quit work in
thehnidst of harvest, is reprehensible.

Protect the Forests.
Pendleton East Oregonian ]
People of the mountain districts i
-hould remember that a law is in ex- I
stence making it unlawful to leave camp
fires burning after departing from a
H.-nping spot. The law contemplates the
utmost care in the extinguishment of all
fires, looking towards the prevention of
orest destruction.
District Attorney
Hailey recently opened up the subject, in
a statement to tbe East Oregonian, and
■hequestion is in consequence being gen
ially discussed throughout tbe moun
tain states. Newspapers are calling at
tention to the necessities oi the situation,
«nd officials are taking steps to secure ob
servance of tbe laws.
Preservation of the forests is a vital
need throughout Oregon and contiguous
dates. Timber lands in the eastern
«tales have peen completely denuded,
md lumbermen have turned to the Pa
cific slope to secure forest holdings for fu
ture supplies of lumber. Vast tracts of
(and bave been taken, and these will be
stripped of all trees fit for Bawing. Not
many vears hence, the coast states will
be facing a situation like that existent in
he east . Our forests are not inexhausti
ble.
The question may well be kept before
he people’s attention. It is one of tbe
most important matters pertaining to the
future of tbe coast legion.

A new industry has been established

to prove a most remunerative one fos

commands good prices almost every

This is undoubtedly an off year in crops,
The elements seem to be conniving
«gainst the farmer by injuring his wheat
and cutting up hie vegetables. As a re
sult he is going to bave to do some close
figuring to make ends meet, where be has
depended on these things alone. The
farmer though who has gone ioto diversi
fied farming,, and has dealt in stork and
fowls and taken cream to the creamery

thing to show for hie labors. As in oth-
■r business it takes continual rustling to
make a profit in the year’s work.

Sa'em Independent:
Recently in
Salem a fallen woman committed suicide
by taking carbolic acid. The day she
was buried, a minister of this city—just
one—and a few W. C. T. U. ladies, held
Funeral services at the hall of the latter
society. The minister made some ap
propriate remarks and offered prayer in
behalf of the poor, misguided soul, and
the ladies sang—“Rock of Ages Cleft for
•e.” ' The undertaker did the rest. The
people who curse and rail at Christianity
were conspicuous for their absence. The
general public, however, was given an
opportunity to “chip in’’ to pay the ex
penses of the woman’s burial. The per
