VALLEY RECORD. The People’s Paper. A8HLAN D. Or......... Thursday, May 9,1895 TUE COST IN WHEAT. In the administration of Frank lin Pierce—and it certainly never was accused of severe economy —the total cost of the national government was not quite 40,- 000,000 bushels of wheat per year. For the fiscal year 1865, during which the government expended much more than in any other | year of the war, the total cost was not quite 700,000,000 bushels of wheat. Last year it was more than 800,000,000 bushels» and what it will be for this fiscal year God alone knows, for on the day I write this the export, price of wheat in New York is 56 cents, and the market is noted as “dull.” It cannot fall below 900,000,000 bushels in any event, or 30 per cent more than in the most expensive year of the civil war. / J. H. BROWNING. Altruria. It has started up again, this time in Sonoma county, CaL It is about 60 miles north of San Francisco. It is an organization formed to realize perfect happiness on earth by introducing as rapidly as possible perfect systems of production and distribution of this world’s goods. You can become a mem ber of it by paying $50. That is to help establish the colony. Mr. Edward B. Payne, writing in The American Maga zine of Civics, says that the aim of the colony is to make all its members com fortable as to enjoyment of this world’s goods, but the “greater thought is to make social life strong, beautiful and sweet and individual experience, free, joyous and noble. ” It is to be hoped by all means that the Altruria colony will succeed in doing this. There is need of it Every Altrurian, male or female, has just the same rights. * ‘The allowance of wealth out of the common stock” will be exactly the same for every member. There can be no Gould millions on the one hand and men hlowing their brains out because they are starving on the other. The colony already has a mem bership of 35—25 grown people, 10 chil dren. Farming and a chicken ranch have been started. There are also a co operative blacksmith shop, furniture factory and grocery. The colonists are publishing a paper. The Altrurian. May these gentle, kindly, honest people realize every one of their golden dreams! Chauncey M. Depew has returnea to New York from a trip through the mid dle West. Talking of his journey he said: “While in the West 1 talked with many men. The general impression there is that business will pick up with i great rapidity. The only thing that dis- \ turbs this feeling is the uncertainty over the money question. The country has finally adjusted itself to the tariff matter and with confidence restored it will hold. Should this cry against our money system, however, amount to any thing the result would be deplorable, and even the most sagacious cannot foretell what would occur. I can fore see that should silver be adopted in a ratio of 16 to 1 as an equivalent money metal, our securities would be returned from abroad and we would be obliged to take them. Loans would be con tracted, gold would appreciate in value and a generally chaotic condition of af fairs would result. ” “Hard times and good times” will be the issue of the national campaign next year, says Chauncey M. Depew to a cor respondent the other day. If such an issue would align the poor against the rich, and drop the present party ties for the nonce, the gold bugs would have to bunt their holes and the question of “sound money” would be immediately settled. Chauncey Depew spoke at the dedica tion of the Detroit Chamber of Com merce the other night on “The Union of the States, ” and Controller Eckels on “ Currency." Washington society is interested in the confirmation of the report that Mrs. Nellie Grant Sartoris and General Rob ert Kyd Douglass of Maryland are en gaged to be married. The Bering sea patrol fleet of United States revenue cutters has departed from Port Townsend. Two English ves sels will CO-operate With the American fleet in preventing poaching. Princeton defeated Yale the other evening in their first joinWebate. The question was: “Resolved, That under the circumstances the income tav of 1894 was justifiable.” Yale had the negative side. Another San Francisco girl has disap peared. Stella Hughes, daughter of Captain Hughes, went out for a walk and has not been seen since. Her father thinks she may have drowned herself. The girl has been acting queerly of late. During the past year the Santa Clara (Cal.) Fruit Exchange handled 4,974,629 pounds of dried fruit, 2,963,304 pounds being prunes. The prices received were good. There are 1,073,778 pounds of dried fruit remaining in the warehouse. The Knights of Labor in Vancouver are starting a co-operative society. The stock is selling at $5 a »here. Several stores will be established as soon as the Sc cess of of their first effort, a general >re, is assured. Regular storekeepers are much displeased at this action. They say they are handicapped by co-opera tive stores, and by losing the patronage of the workingmen their business will probably be ruined. The national convention of the Amer ican Protective Association is being held in Milwaukee this week. A supreme officer of the order says that the time has come when the A. P. A. will openly assert itselt politically, and one or the other of the great parties must adopt the principles it is fighting for, or the A. P. A would be in the field with a presi dential candidate next year. A medal which «ost $1,000 was presented to the founder of the Orfler, Henry G. Bowers. f Whooping Cough. There is nodanger from this disease when Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy is freely given. It liquefies the tough mucus ana aids its expectoration. It also lessens the severity and frequency of paroxysms of coughing, and insures a speedy recovery. The interior department is taking 6teps to have the number of abandoned military reservations scattered all over the country opened for settlement. The law provides that an appraiser shall be appointed who shall visit such aban doned reservations. Edward Crafts of Austin, Ill., has been appointed as the appraiser at $5 per day, and is to begin work at once. It is hoped that all the reservations can be opened before the summer is oter. There are some 75 of them, 14 of which contain more than 5,000 acres. These are Forts Thomas and Verde, A T.; Fort Dodge, Kan.; Bólse Blank Island, Mich. ; Fort Magin- nis, Mont ; Forts Craig, Cummings and Seldon, N. M. ; Fort Abraham Lincoln, N. In deciding the case of Joel Parker Whitney against Frank Taylor in error to the circuit court for the northern dis trict of California, involving the title to a quarter section of land in California, the United States supreme court held that where on the records of a local land office there existed a claim on the part of an individual to land within a rail road land grant under the homestead or pre-emption laws, which have been recognized by the officers of the govern ment and not canceled, the tract in dis pute is exempt from the operation of the grant. The decision of the court below was affirmed. The supreme court denied the petitions for a rehearing in the cases of the St. Louis and San Fran cisco Railway company against Gill and three other defendants, in error, a dam age case: and Mulkey and Bannon against the United States, an opium smuggling case. President Cleveland is writing a book on political economy. He has been at work on the volume for four years. His book is divided into four departments— production, consumption, distribution and exchange—and there is a special chapter under the department of con sumption on the theory of marginal utility. This theory does not seem to find much favor with Mr. Cleveland. From what can be gathered on the au thority of those who have talked with Mr. Cleveland he does not mean to ex pound a doctrine so much as to make clear the lines along which progress in economic thought must proceed. This way of going to work has permitted copious illustrations drawn from Amer ican history. In this Mr. Cleveland seems to strike a new note. What the president writes is the work of his own hand. In his library at Woodley Mr. Cleveland reads far into the night. He writes at late hours, too.
