As Medford is located in the centre of the valley and on the railroad, it is thought by Sledford people to be the only proper place in the county for the county seat. A son was born to the wife of Dr. Geary at Medford, Jan. 31st. J. W. Wiley shipped another carload of hogs last week to San Francisco. Mrs. R. O’Fling of Salem is visiting her brother, Dr. Geo. Kahler, at Phoenix. Dr. G. B. Cole, the physician of Phoenix, was in Ashland Monday on business. The 9-year old son of C. D. Wilson of Klamath Falls, died there the other day. Sims & Hursh of the popular Central Point hotel will give a grand ball Feb. 22d. H. L. Gill formerly of the Oswego Iron worker. was here this week on a business trip. Mrs. D. E. Hyde organized a W. C. T. U. at Gold Hill last week with 22 mem bers. M rs. Judge Tolman was called home from her Portland stay Monday by the death of Grit’s wife. Wm. Cox and Miss Bettie Know of Gold Hill were married at Jacksonville last week. W. W. Wilson has sold his Antelope ranch to Luther Taylor, a new comer from Kansas. Miss Sophie Muller has returned to Oakland, Cal., from a visit with Jackson county relatives. Mrs. David Fox has been visited the past week by two sisters, Mrs. Wagner of Forest Grove and Mrs. Fox of Nebraska. J. H. Cballen was down in Josephine county this week looking after a mining proposition for an eastern syndicate. Mrs. Anna Weaver, a ’56 pioneer of Douglas county, died at her home near Myrtle creek recently, aged 82 years. J. A. Whitman of Medford has invest ed in four China pheasants and will stock that section with these game birds. The Woodruff S'sters and Brother Bird, well-known musicians of Jackson county, are playing for dances in C jos county this winter. Ed Simon and Miss Charlotte Beale, well-known voune people of Butte creek, were married at Jacksonville last Thurs day by Rev. R. Ennis. Harry G. Mathes is canvalescing from the operation of having a large abscess on the back of his head (which followed up a case of typhoid fever) removed. Sykes Worden, now of Sonoina countv, was on Sunday’s train for Portland from a trip to Ft. Fisher, who runs a first class influential newspaper, the Roseburg Re view, was married the other day to Miss Effie Owens, an interesting young lady whose family is well-known in Oregon. Mrs. T. 8. Bidwell, committed suicide at that place on the 26th. He had perpetrated some dastardly act, and knowing it would be revealed sooner or later, preferred to die rather than have it known.—Lakeview Examiner. And yet some white people are spending money educating the Indian to a moral con sciousness. James K. Polk Brown was turned out of the penitentiary last Thursday after spend ing 12 years there for incest committed on bis oldest daughter in Ashland, where Brown was engaged in the carpentering business. He was sentenced for 30 years and Ex-Gov Pennoyer commuted it just before retiring. The Salem papers say he was provided with a new suit of clothes and some money and left for Ashland to visit his family oi children, The trouble growing out of tho attack made upon Archbishop Ireland of St. Paul, Minn., by Bishop McQuaid of Rochester, N. Y., lias been the subject of an inquiry’ by the Vatican at Rome, it haviug beeu held by the supporters of the archbishop that the sermon deliv ered by Bishop McQuaid in the Roches ter cathedral was subversive of church discipline. In this sermon Bishop Mc Quaid condemned Archbishop Ireland for what he alleged was improper in terference in behalf of the Republican party in the last state election. Briefly, the conclusions of the court are that Bishop McQuaid committed a mistake in his sermon and in the reason he as signed for the necessity of such deliv ery. Archbishop Ireland is sustained in all the positions he has taken in the matter. The Berlin Volksblatt published a parody on a poem written by Emperor william and the paper was confiscated.
