Pennoyer on t he Strike. Salem, Or.. July 2.—Governor Pen noyer, having received a telegram from a number of delayed passengers at Ash land, Bent it to-day, with the following letter, to the board of railroad commis sioners : “Enclosed find a telegram from Ashland. I trust your board will do all that can be done in the premises. I deem it most re prehensible in the Southern Pacific Rail road Company, by stopping other cars than Pullmans, to seriously discommode the traveling and business public, for the sole purpose, it would seem, of settling a dis pute between an exacting monopolist and nis employes, by the full strength of its power, to be reinforced by the power of the federal government, which dispute should rightfully be settled by arbitration.” The state executive committee of the People’s party of Oregon has issued the following relative to the strike: The time has come when the industrial question is a political question, A political party that is not with the wealth producers is against them. The first platform of our party declared that an injury to one is the concern of all. The people’s party in Ore gon, besides other producers, fully endorse the effort of the American Railway Union to compel justice from our would-be mas ters, wno own the railroads, bonds and mortgages of America. We, therefore, rec ommend that our people everywhere ren der all possible aid and comfort to the strikers, and that farmers give provisions to the proper committees. The United States courts are intensely anxious to find strikers violating some law, but never investigating railway magnates. The struggle is between the money class of Europe, as well as America, and the wealth producers of our country. In such a con test farmers should stand with their own class, the wage workers. Wages are as much and as directly influenced by, law as the price of wheat, and neither farmers nor wage-workers will ever obtain justice until they unite at the polls and themselves make the laws at the ballot box by the initi ative and referendum. We call on our par ty everywhere to declare in favor of the la borer and against the magnates. W. H. 8 paugh , Ch’n J. F. H endrex , Treas. A. P. N elson , Member Com. Belvidere, Ill., Dec. 3, 1891.
