Judge Reid, in connection with Mangum & Stewart, who already own valuable placers on Applegate, have bought James McDonough’s Fort Lane placers at Tolo and within 90 days will have the mine operated by extensive pumping machinery that will raise 1,750,000 gal lons of water per day out of Rogue river. The machinery will lift the water 65 feet out of Rogue river and then be carried in pipes 800 feet to the mine. Reid, Mangum A Stewart have prospected the ground pretty thoroughly and find that it will average $8 to the cubic yard in gold dust. This mine has been worked as dry diggings every season since 1853 and at one time $2400 was taken out of a pay chute in the ledge that feeds these placers. Jim Birdsey shipped $200 worth of geld from Central Point Saturday that he ground out in one day’s work with a hand mortar in the Birdsey, Swinden & Knotts ledge.
