The logs will go to the North Bend Lumber Company's mill.— Daily Times. f. D. SPERRY Smith-Powers Bnya Camp. Attorney and Connoellor at Law. The equipment of the Hoeck lum ber camp at Beaver Hill has been purchased by the Smith-Powers Timber Company, says the Marsh field Times. The camp was quite a large one, and about 100 men were employed there. It is located near the Beaver Hill mine, and a branch railroad extends to the oamp. There ia about twelva miles of steel rails, two locomotives, five donkey en gines. and a lot of other machinery. For the present the new owners will clean up th* camp, and later on will move the entire equipment from where it ia now located. It will be used in a new camp just north of the divide, which will have a railroad to bring the logs to the head of Isthmus Inlet, on which stream they will be floated to the Smith mill. The purchase makes the seventh camp which the Smith- Powers Co. is now operating in the county. Two more enmps opening on Isthmus Inlet are also to be es- tablished'soon. The H ebalp last week made brief mention of the fatal accident which befell Grant Ames near Bandon ou the 14th inst. Frcm the Recorder of the 17th we glean the following additional particulars: Mr. Ames and Jimmy Curran were riding along the beach below the lookout, each on a horse, when suddenly Ames was knocked off bis horse by a great breaker which rushed in upon him, carrying the animal off its feet and throwing him into the surf. Here he was buffet ed by the waves until Mr. Curran could get him out. Just how it all happened will never be fully ex plained. Mr. Curran rushed to the aid of the imperiled man as quickly as he could, but before he could drag him from the water Ames had apparently ceased to breathe. Cur ran worked with him fora while un til be could get word to the look out, when the life-saving station was notified and the entire crew went at once to his assistance, but owing to the long distance it was perhaps 45 minutes before they reached the spot. Then efforts to resuscitate the body seemed in vain for 3 hours but finally he began to breathe, and later was so far recovered that it was thought safe to bring him home. Here he apparently contin ued to improve until 1 o’clock Tues day, when suddenly and without warning be passed away. Grant Ames was born in Jackson county, Oregon, April 15, 1867. He leaves a widow and 6 children; was highly thought of, and carried in surance on bis life in the Modern Woodmen. Interment took place in the Bandon Cemetery Thursday.
