C oquillk , O regon . Phone Main 198. To resume where I left off in my last letter: I A. F. Kirshman, D «NTI8T. OSes two door* South of Post ofllo*. Coquille W . . . How I wish that I could describe the remarkable beauty of this coun try: Rural England, tho so green and pretty, does not compare with Scotland, I think. Oregon. . THRESHER ATTORNEY-AT-LAW At Cambridge we visited all tho men’s colleges where we saw many interesting things, among them the original manuscript of “ Henry Esmond” . Wo bad a fine luncheon in one of the college dining rooms with the Arch-Deacon. Auntie, of course is much interested in the two women’s colleges, Newnhnm and Girton, which we will visit later on. and fascinating place I have yet seen. First we visited the castle, the finest one that nas been pre served. It is still in use and tortiGed, Is built upon a high hill and what must have been a hug" rock; part of the rough rock being built into the wall. It is supposed to have keen built about 900 yeats before Christ, and was then called ‘ Maiden’s Castle” . An interesting part of tho castle is that once occu pied by Queen Mary, and where James VI was born, and lowered down over tbo rock thousands of feet in a basket. One of the finest sights in Edin burgh was that of the Queens Scottish Itegirneut, in their kilts and full Highland costume. From the castle we went to see St G iles Cathedral, and from there to Holy- rood Palace and chapel— the chapel roofless now. In the Palace we saw the rooms which once be longed to Mary Quean of Scots; her bed left just as it was in her time but now falling to pieces with age. One can still see the private stair case leading up into her rooms. After a drive, we shall go to the great Scottish Exhibiton. It is strange we should happen along just in time for this and also the great Franco-Britisli one. 30,000 visitors. This, at a very con servative estimate, should swell the figures to something like $3,500,000. It will be noticed that no estimate has been given of the butter and poultry, eggs, pork and beef. For these it would be safe to add an other $500,000. Th:s estimate is probably much too low, as it is only about $27 for each farmer. For the root, grass, hay and grain crops we may safely add another $ )00,000. This makes a grand total production of the farms and gardens of $4,500,- 000, an average of over $387 per acre. As the above figures are con servative, it is thought that $400 per acre is only a fair estimate of the returns from every acre of the islaud under cultivation. So much for the Agricultural and horticul tural returns. The stone quarries of Guernsey are also famous. They produce the hardest granite known in Great Britain. The revenue from this source alone is over $3,000,000 per year. They are shipping at the present time every week day be tween three and four thousand tons of crushed rock for macadam and blocks for building. The valne of farming lands is given in the address as based on sales of the last five years equaling £250 or about $1200 per acre. Land rents from $35 to $100 pcracre or about 10 per cent on its value. The money required and in circu lation through the banking houses of the island is estimated at $100, 000,000 annually.— Country Gentle man. B A SE B A L L SCH EDLE. SHERWOOD P r o .
