A Republican President In no uncertain terms, the American people elected Gen. Dwight Eisenhower as the next president of the United States and ended a twenty year period of Democratic control of the presidency and congress. It was a vote of landside proportions that swept across the nation and cracked the Democratic southland and though Gov. Adlai Stevenson polled more votes to lose than President Truman did to win in 1948, the phenomenal majority of the General was still many millions to the good. We regard the election of Gen. Eisen hower and a Republican control of congress as a healthy sign. It means that despite the caterwauling o f the Republicans for twenty years, the Democratic Santa Claus did not kill off the opposition. It means that given a reason to vote against and not for, the Amer ican people will, and the vote last Tuesday was a “no” vote even as the American people swept to the polls in 1932 to vote against the Republicans. Governor Stevenson who is regarded as one of the true classic Americans poured from a fine mold indeed could not carry the Tru man administration around his neck and win. The fact that the little man went out barn storming may be one of the reasons Gov. Stevenson lost again. And surely the South voted against the FEPC and Harry Truman who had repeatedly slapped them in the face more than they — did ----------- for Eisenhower. ___ they A sober analysis of the election brings out facts now that: Eisenhower is not making a quick trip to Korea. He will be told by his own West Point alumni that it will take years to pre pare the South Koreans to, hold their battle- front. He now views the Korean conflict as no easy and quick thing to settle. Eisenhower who promised a quick cut m taxes and paring down of government ex penditures now admits frankly that the world tension and defense problems may "rule out any cut in taxes next year.” , Promising the farmers even more partly than they had gotten under the Democratic rule, this source of change is not to be ex- would do little to the Taft-Hartley act and employers can gain little relief from whatever he will do here. For the Republicans who are expectirg a quick return to the nostalgic past, we say that America has new problems. For the Dem ocrats who view the election of the Republi cans as a cause for alarm, we say General Eisenhower and most of the men going into Congress with him are capable, intelligent, and fine Americans. Perhaps the keynote sounded by Gov. Stevenson when he said “All Americans should now close ranks” is the best words all Americans can live by. Surely the problems of the world, of the Russian menace, of in creasing defense needs, are still with us. And they will be for a long time.
