HELPFUL H IN T DEPA RT MENT: Many a beautiful cast hasi been started w ith the intention of! throwing the lead fa r out into the breakers only to see the s in ke r: stop suddenly in m id-air and leave the line on the spool in a tangled j mess — the so-called “ bird-nest." 1 The cause of this is an over-run- J ning spool which means that the spool is paying out more line than ! the flying sinker requires. Re sult—the loose line w ill get r e - , versely wound on the spool a n d . cause the backlash. In casting, the sinker is losing speed rapidly due, to air resistance and the p u ll of the line, whereas the spool, running in almost frictionless 'bearings, w ill keep on running at almost the original speed The only rem edy Is to reduce the speed of the spool by thumbing and letting the spool pay out only as much line as is required by the sinker. This proper method of thumbing might seem d iffic u lt to the beginner, but by watching the line as it leaves the spool and starting to thumb as soon as loose line develops, backlashing w ill be eliminated. Another point is to wind the line evenly and tig htly on the spool, as a loose line w il dig in and cause backlash. A short cast to wet the line before casting is also helpful. Never dip your reel in the water. You w ill only get the inside of the reel wet and very little of the line. The best reel to help T elim- * , inate backlash difficulties is the PFLUEGER AKERITE MECHANICAL THUMBER. You will find this reel at THORNTON’S SPORTING GOODS STORE IN MYRTLE POINT.
