Coos county farmers who are parti- j cl pa ting in the Agricultural Conser- ' vation program will receive an aver- ag* diversion payment of $8 per acre instead of $6 which was the average for farms throughout the United States for diverting land from the production of soil depleting crops to the production of soil conserving crops, according to information just received by the local association from the state office. In addition to the $8 diversion rate, a payment of $5.85 for each acre di verted will be made to apply on the soil building allowance on diversion farms and the average soil building allowance rate .per acre on all crop land on non-diversion farms will be $1.19 per acre as compared with the 80c for an average for the United States as a whole. According to the information, just received, practically the same pay ment will be made for the diversion from the production of depleting ?rops such as grain, corn, potatoes, root crops, etc., to the production of conserving crops r such as alfalfa, clover, apd permanent grasses. The only, difference from last year’s pro gram is that $5.95 of this payment goes to build up the soil building al lowance instead of being paid direct for diversion, it was stated by George Jenkins, county agent. Thia will make it posaible for the farm operator to determine how much he can earn and what can be done to earn the al lowance, Jenkins stated. The rate of payment on individual farms will vary according to the pro ductivity of the farm as determined by the county committee just as the rates paid in each county vary with the productivity of the crop land in that county. The rates paid in Coos county are second from the highest paid in Oregon being exceeded only by Malheur county which carries a rate of >10 for diversion, $6.70 for soil building allowance on diverted acres, and $1.34 on crop land on non diversion farms.
