BAKER CITY HERALD — 7A MONDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2019 BAKER SWIMMING BAKER GIRLS BASKETBALL AT GLADSTONE HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT Bulldogs clamp down to win Gladstone tournament ■ Baker holds Gladstone to 35 points and Valley Catholic to 34 in a pair of wins By Jayson Jacoby jjacoby@bakercityherald.com Baker’s girls basketball team turned the disappoint- ment of its fi rst loss in more than a year into motivation for two decisive victories. The Bulldogs, fresh from a 47-46 loss to Burns on Tuesday in the Baker gym, traveled across the state and beat host Gladstone 52-35 on Friday and Valley Catholic 66- 34 on Saturday to claim the title in the Gladstone Holiday Tournament. Baker senior point guard Sydney Younger said the Bulldogs had a “team talk” during practice on Wednesday, the day after Burns ended Baker’s 25-game winning streak. “It made us hungry for the following games,” said Young- er, who led Baker in scoring in both wins at Gladstone. The Bulldogs, 8-1 on the season and ranked third in Class 4A, took a 13-8 lead after the fi rst quarter against Gladstone and Friday and never trailed thereafter. Younger said Baker’s defense, which faltered at times against Burns, was much more consistent in both games at Gladstone. “For the most part we brought intensity,” she said. “I think that’s why we really thrived in those two games.” Younger’s coach, Mat Sand, agreed. “The difference in both games this weekend was our defensive intensity,” he said. After Jade Rowley scored 7 of Gladstone’s 9 points in the fi rst quarter Friday, Baker held her to just 5 points the rest of the game. Baker, meanwhile, relied on balanced scoring to take a 21-15 lead at halftime. Younger had 5 points, Jocelynn Hellberg and Hailey Zikmund 4 each, and Sydney Keller and Anna Carter 3 apiece. Zikmund added 6 more points in the third quarter as Baker extended its lead to 39-27. Younger made 6 of 8 free throws in the fi nal period to help hold the Gladiators at bay. She led Baker with 14 points. Zikmund added 10 and freshman Jozie Ramos 8. Saturday’s championship game against Valley Catholic of Beaverton was competitive for a quarter, as Baker led 15-12. But the Bulldogs, as they have in several games this season, dominated one quar- ter, outscoring Valley Catholic 21-4 in the second period to take a commanding 36-16 lead at halftime. Senior Isabella Nemec led the Bulldogs with 7 points in the half. Younger, Sydney Keller and Benson had 6 each. Baker cruised in the second half. Younger scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter. Ramos added 14 points, and Keller 9. “I couldn’t be more proud of the girls over the weekend,” Ronald Bond / The (La Grande) Observer Baker’s Brianna Stadler set a meet record in the 100 butterfl y Saturday at the La Grande Invita- tional. Baker takes 3rd at La Grande LA GRANDE — Baker’s Brianna Stadler won two races, setting meet records in both, and helped lead the Bulldogs to a third-place fi nish in the La Grande Invitational Saturday. The Baker boys also fi nished third in the team standings. Stadler, a sophomore, won the 100 butterfl y and 100 backstroke events. She set a state record in the latter event at the state meet last February. Her time of 1:00.86 at La Grande set a meet record. Stadler also broke the meet record with her time of 1:00.55 in the 100 butterfl y. Baker’s Salena Bott fi nished 2nd in the 10 breast- stroke. On the boys side, Baker’s Jacob Miller was 2nd in the 100 breaststroke. Other Baker results: S. John Collins/ Baker City Herald Sydney Younger drives against Burns’ Aundraya Ceja on Dec. 17. Seattle (11-4) lost control of its path to a bye in the NFC playoffs after getting dominated in a 27-13 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday. Losing control of a needed bye for a battered team was only the start of the bad news for Seattle. After the loss, coach Pete Carroll said starting run- ning back Chris Carson is done for the season with a hip injury suffered in the second quarter. His backup C.J. Prosise was injured minutes later with a broken arm that will keep him out for the year. And to top it off, Carroll said left tackle Duane Brown — who did not play — will undergo minor knee surgery on Monday and will miss at least a couple weeks. That means Seattle’s best offensive lineman, along with its top running backs, will all be spectators next week when Seattle plays San Francisco for the NFC West title. Seattle would like to earn a fi rst-round bye and entered the week at the No. 1 seed in the NFC thanks to owning a three-team tiebreaker with New Orleans and Green Bay. But the Seahawks failed to keep pace and can guarantee themselves only the No. 3 seed with a win next week if they don’t get help.
