Jones said he will empha- size to his players that their performance against Valley Catholic, in particular their teamwork on defense, shows what they’re capable of. “We’re not the tallest team, we’re not the quickest team, but if we keep playing together we can compete with anybody,” Jones said. Baker embarks after Christmas on its third long trip in three weeks, this time to compete in the three-day Sisters tournament. Baker will play Henley on Friday at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs’ Satur- day and Sunday game times and opponents will be deter- mined depending on fi rst-day results. By Jayson Jacoby jjacoby@bakercityherald.com The Baker boys basketball team responded to one of its worst defensive performances of the young season by turn- ing in perhaps its best. A day after losing 71-49 to Gladstone, the Bulldogs stifl ed Valley Catholic of Beaverton 46-23 Saturday in the consolation fi nal at the Gladstone Holiday Tourna- ment. Baker held Valley Catholic to just 5 points in the fi rst half. The Bulldogs led 21-5 at halftime. “Holding Valley Catholic to 5 points in a half, that’s pretty special,” Baker coach Jebron Jones said. “Our boys played hard — not just in the fi rst half but the entire game.” Jones said Baker didn’t employ a full-court press or other potentially risky tactics to thwart Valley Catholic. “We were keeping a hand up in the shooter’s face, and we held them to one shot most of the time,” he said. On the other side of the court, Gabe Gambleton scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the fi rst half. The night before, Baker struggled with host team Gladstone early, allowing 23 points to the Gladiators in the fi rst quarter. But Baker didn’t let the game get away.
